My mechanic hooked up an MSD6-AL for me and although he is very good (been doing high perf stuff for many years) The box almost fell off !! 3 of the 4 MSD factory mounts broke within the first week!
It seems these boxes come with a rubber mount that has 2 threaded studs on each end. It looks like the studs just pop into a recessed area in the rubber donut and don't go all the way through. I have 3 of the 4 mounts sticking thru the radiator support holding nothing and the box flopping around on one mount.
I noticed on e bay yesterday someone was selling the mount kit for the MSD boxes which consisted of these 4 mounts. I wouldn't give .02 for them!
We're replacing them with bolts that have nyloc nuts on them (but still keeping the rubber mounts.
Not yet... Bill and I put my box on about a month ago and I've driven it 1500 miles or so since then.. I'll go check it and report back... Maybe your mechanic doesn't have the touch to know when enough torque is enough and it just destorted the rubber and the metal popped out... Not saying that's it but hey it's possible... Dave...

I can't quite remember how mine is mounted. It was out under the hood for awhile and it's been under the passenger side dash for years now. I probably have it bolted throught the rubber gromets.
I have several sets of the MSD rubber mounts laying around that I use for mounting vibration-sensitive components on project cars (none of which are as heavy as an MSD box), and the studs don't interlock internally like a true "Lord" mount - the heads of the studs are just molded into each side of the rubber donut. The mounts take much more of a beating out near the rad support than they do inside the car.
I mounted mine up in the fender well area near the battery. I had it mounted on the other side(fenderwell) for about 4 years before the new motor. I havent had any issues at all. It may be something defective?
I took the car back today and he is fixing it, I think they did overtighten them. That seems very logical as that would be an ideal way to pull the studs right out of the rubber.
My mechanic said they have mounted hundreds of them, even upside down without a problem .......
So naturally, I get to be the one to test the durability of the box.
I had to buy a NEW MSD box this year to replace the one installed in 2000 with the ZZ4: "cracked board" & MSD couldn't fix it Price in '00: $122; '05: $188
All because I wanted to see the tach in the '62 go "roundy-round"; shoulda just stuck with the (non-tach drive) HEI distributor that came with the "crate" & saved a BUNCHA $$$! Cruz
