I'm sure that they can be dyed black. The other thing you might want to investigate, is just to recover the seats. Take the original seat cover off and get a repro cover in black.
I am going to change my C-1 from red interior to black. My seats are excellent condition, can they be dyed black? What preparation do I have to do?
Thanks for any help.
I've had inconsistent results dying vinyl and leather. Sometimes it turns out nice, other times adhesion is an issue. It also seems to fade over time - seats are not too expensive to have recovered. I think the big issue is the dash (is your dash covered or metal? Don't know much about the C1 except they are so cool) - Carpet is a piece of cake to replace - I wouldn't bother dying it. I have noticed on hot days if I rub against a dyed surface with a white shirt I pick up some dye. Also if anyone ever used a silicone product (armour all) you get fish eyes and all kinds of problems.
Magic Mender makes a leather restoration system and dye that is used by many concourse restoration shops. I used it to repair the cracks in the leather of a Mustang, and re-color the interior, worked extremely well and has last 3 years without any flaws. Simple preparation and application. Make certain you buy the Lexol cleaner and preservative if you use this product!
1drivr, there is a very good article on interior dying in the May 2005 issue of Corvette Fever. My passenger side dash (also wanted to keep orig so only option was dying a donor pad) went from brown to black and has lasted many years. The following is listed for material in the article:
1) Car wash soap (part cleaning which is most important)
2) Xylene solvent
3) Lacquer thinner (if needed)
4) Vinly dye
5) SEM satin gloss clear
