Default Engine Mount Question.

I replaced the fuel pump in my '67 Coupe last weekend. While under the car I noticed that there are 3 washers stacked between the motor mount and the engine block (on each of the mounting bolts). I am curious if these need to be there. Ever since I had my new engine installed I have had an issue with the alternator bracket (the top arm where you set the tension) just touching the underside of the hood when the engine torques under heavy load. From what I can see these washers raise the engine about 5/16". Could these washers have been added due to some clearance problem with the new GM 454/425hp Crate engine?

I would welcome anyone's comment as to wether these washers should be left in place or if I should remove them.

Thanks, Roy

That's an interesting one. I haven't seen washers added to the engine mount before. Is it a clearance issue on the underside of the motor (i.e. oil pan to the steering linkage) that would warrant the additional spacing?

There is plenty of clearance for the steering linkage and I cannot see where anything else would be a problem. The harmonic balancer has clearance as well as the fan blade. The top of the fan blade clears the shroud by only 3/16" at the top.

The only reason for any spacer is if you have BB with AC. The General added a 3/16" (?) spacer to bring the engine back to level the carb with the added weight of the comp etc. Or so I've been told.

Is it safe to assume that from what you and Vette-66 are saying, it should be safe to remove the washers? If I do it should give me a little more under-hood clearance that will keep the alternator bracket from hitting the hood.

Ditch 'em.

Check your mount bolts they now may be too long.

Did they leave the stock 6 qt pan on the motor? If so, the shims are probably there to clear the tie rods.
I used the 4 qt. Vette pan for the MK V& VI BB.

Get a V shim for the motor mount if your car is supposed to have them.

You can put a restraining bolt in the LH motor mount, if you want to keep the alternator bracket out of the hood support. I have one in my LH mount. You can see it near the bottom of the Details page, linked off my home page (listed below).
