Default It was fun for a while.....

It's been about 6 weeks since my car was reassembled and what fun it was to drive. Now, It's apart again.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a tempermental carb, that should be done today.

Tore up most of the dash yesterday to get the radio out, since it hasn't worked in the last 4 years. Sending it out today for a rebuild/stereo conversion. It may not be original anymore, but at least I'll have some tunes when I want.

Since the dash is already torn up, today I'll start removing the old heater assembly getting ready for the Classic Air unit that should arrive in the next week or so. Also got all the new pulleys, brackets and wiring ordered that I needed to move my alternator from the pass side to the drivers side.

Already installed my "stealth" cruise control, so long trips are not a problem anymore.

Going to be a lot of work in the next few weeks, as I'm really trying to be ready for Carlisle. I'll be there even if I don't have a dashboard.

Man, you accomplish more in a few nights of messing around than I do in an entire winter! Hope you get it back together and are behind the wheel of a running car soon - I have no doubt you will.

I was going to wait till winter for the A/C installation, but the wife took a ride with me a couple of weeks ago and got roasted. She OK'd the A/C install ASAP.

gotta go with what keeps the boss happy.

did you find anything unusual when you tore the carb down that might explain the behavior? are you doing a basic rebuild just to rule such items out?

You're not fooling me. Like me, you find it more fun to work on these things than it is to drive them. The only reason we put them back together is for the sense of accomplishment at having finished the latest job. Then we take them apart to start on something else. ... Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed driving my car for 27 years. But I take greater pleasure from having fought my way through the latest project to get it running again.

subfixer,

You do get ansy don't you? Nuthin' like havin' a project to sink your arms in. I'm looking forward to meeting you and seeing your passion at Carlisel (this will be my first time). I too, registered in the 63-67 Registry there. Nope, I won't have air for the trip (and I'll probably kick myself). Cruise control?? Gotta see this!

Hey magicV8, Corvettes at Carlisle is 8/26-8/28. Goin' trippin'??

Hope to meet a lot of you forum folks there.

Regards,

Jim

subfixer,

Forgot to ask you what pulleys you ended up with. Are you using the idler pulley as well when you convert to air?

Jim - he cannot, as he has PS on there, sort of occupies the idler pulley space.

Wow, lots of questions to answer...

Jack,
I just rebuilt the carb. Changed the power valve and the needle/seat assemblies. The gaskets in there were not the newer blue Holley ones, so maybe one was leaking by. There was also some sort of crud on the power valve. Cleaned and blew everything out, checked all parts for warpage (none found) but haven't driven anywhere yet as the rest of the car is in pieces. Started right up with no leaks. Let it warm up and reset the float levels. (BTW- I did all that stuff in my first post yesterday afternoon, and rebuilt the clock today).

Islander21,
I used the same cruise control that MagicV8 is using. Dash mounted control, Audiovox from J.C.Whitney. I was able to hide the control head down inside the left front fender well. Attached the mounting bracket to the #1 body mount bolt at the firewall. Had to play with the switch settings a bit to get it to work, but it's really great. It has the option of measuring speed from the driveshaft or the coil (-) post. I went the coil setup, since in 4th gear, the engine won't run any faster than the driveshaft. Ran the throttle cable and wiring along the top of the firewall along with the stock wiring. Virtually invisible except for where the throttle control attaches to the throttle rod near the carb. Control buttons are stashed under the dash. Easy to get to, hard to see.

65Rush,
The car was originally a 327/300 that I converted to a 327/365 setup with the LT-1 solid lifter cam. At the moment, I'm using all the stock SHP deep groove pulleys for a 65 327/350 with power steering. With the addition of the air conditioner, I will be moving the alternator to the driver's side with the factory mounts, a deep groove add-on crank pulley and different waterpump and power steering pump pulleys. All the new pulleys are the deep groove ones used for a 65 327/350 with A/C and P/S. I like to stay with the factory engineered stuff. Much easier, since they did all the thinking 40 years ago. No sense re-inventing the wheel. The only non stock brackets will be the ones that the Sanden compressor mounts to, since Classic Air recommended not using the A-6 compressor because the Sanden 508 is more efficient. Like Jack answered, I didn't have the idler pulley there due to the power steering. Also using the non-SHP oil pan.

I think that covers it all. When it's all done, I'll add some more pics to "My Corvette Photos". It'll be a couple of weeks I hope.

65trush - trip to Carlisle? - not this year according to the dates.
I'll be in MT at the beginning of the month, and I have a med op schedulled for the middle of the month.

I'll be at the Corvette Funfest in September. The free concert this year is by the Beach "Boys" (my wife says they should rename to the Beach Men. Effingham hotels are already booked solid.
