This is really a neat little device!


Controller Link
NEW PROGRAMABLE FAN CONTROLLER

* Programable fan on/off points

* Uses factory gauge sending unit

* Varies fan speed

* Signals AC systems with fans

* Dual fans with additional relay harness

Now you can set the fan on/off points at any temperatures you want! This new contoller uses the factory guage sending unit as it's feedback, so you do not have to install any other switch or sensor. The controller will also vary the fan speed as cooling is required. The PWM control module is for controlling a single fan. If dual fans are required, then you will need to purchase another relay harness. Item SP195FH

Hi Tom,

I am interested in purchasing this unit from you but first have a few questions:

1. Can this unit be connected to the temp sending unit on the intake manifold and also keep the guage connected also? Could the connection to this unit be made to the other side under the dash at the input wire at the temp guage? (So I can mount this unit underneath the dash inside the car.

2. By connecting it to the temp sending unit does it change the readings on the guage?

3. Does this unit include a relay, or do I have to buy that separately?

4. How is the unit programmed if I want to use this on a mid year vette?
How is it programmed?

I tried to get this information from the Spal website but couldnt find it on thier website. Is it posted on Spal?

I still think the Derale adjustable controller makes more sense with a rad fin probe. The fan should react to the radiator temp. The engine temp is controlled by the tstat. The fan cools the coolant in the radiator, not the engine. If the engine overheats on a 20F day, running the fan will not help - IMO the coolant in the rad will be below 100F on a 20F day even if the engine is idling in the driveway.

The Derale controller also allows 2 fans and leaves the temp sender alone.

Default Fan Controller

I wish I had a 3/8 npt bung fitting on the bottom of my aluminum radiator on the upper radiator hose (driver side), it would be the perfect place to install the thermal sending unit that many suppliers provide with thier fan relay controllers. I dont want to remove the radiator and I do not have any experience with welding an aluminum bung fitting. In retrospect I should have asked to have this bung installed before it was shipped. The drain valve on the other side of the radiator in this same spot and its very convienent for draining the unit. Could I use the drain bung with a series of adapters that end up accepting a 3/8 npt device? Would probaly look terrible sticking down below the radiator with the additional adapters.

On the other hand, this 3/8 sender turns the fan on at 195 degrees and off at 185. I think that by using that one will only cause the fan to come on and them from there it will never turn off. Ots a modified BB and it runs at 200 degrees on a good day. Tom's is an adjustable temp controller and I like that feature.

I plan to install what ever I end up with to control the Spal fan under the dash and no wiring or relays in the radiator area. Just the red and ground fan feed wires in the radiator area fed from under the dash area.

So this eliminates the Derale unit mentioned above since the capillary tube that goes imto the radiator core is not long enough to install the variable controller under the dash.

Maybe Tom's controller is the best alternative, but we cant confirm that by splicing the Spal controller into the temp guage green wire will result in the guage reading not being accurate as it is presently.

Any ideas? Has anyone installed the Spal controller that Tom sells above to the factory temp guage sending unit? and the stock guage still reads accurately?

Or maybe I should just not use a automatic sending unit and just install a fan relay and a toggle switch under the dash. Then I can control iy anytime I want to..........

Why do you want the control under the dash?

Mine is behind the LH headlamp assembly.

Or conversely, has anyone installed one to the factory sender and have the gauge read wrong? I'd like to know too.

Magic V8,

Youu can conceal this better than in a C2 model. Lees room to hide it on C2.

I do not want all of that hardware and wiring in the front of the car. I just want to run the red wire from the dash relay or controller to the fan with everything inside, Much cleaner.

Can anyone answer Tom's question above?
