Default Help identifying engine block

I don't believe the engine in my 67 427 is correct but I'm curious as to its orgin. The letters GM3 are on the top left rear and directly below are the letters conv2 with a capital T to the right. The casting #'s are very hard to read and I can only make out a few.39?5??9.
On the right rear of the block the letters appear to be
H-PO.The front pad is correct but almost certainly a restamp since the casting #'s appear incorrect..Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Emmett,

The casting # for a 1967 427 should be 3904351, and this number is located behind the left side cylinder head on the bell housing flange part of the block.

Emmett, check out this website

http://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm

I looked there, but found nothing that matches--maybe your eyes are better than mine. You can identify big block, small block and cow block heads, cranks, & blocks there.

Does anyone remember what a cow block is ???

RON

Emmett,

I think I found it. Could it be 3935439 ??? According to the website that's a 68-69 427 passenger block. Could be either 2 or 4 bolt mains.

Yes, the oil filter changed to the spin on type in 68, and from what I understand, there is no way to get the old style filter to fit on a newer block. New filter on an old block with an adapter---YES, but old style filter on a newer block---I don't think so. The sealing ridge where the gasket goes is not present on new style blocks.

Light trucks used a can filter on the 68 up blocks. The adapter will let any 68 block use the can filter but the 68 up blocks have 5/16s bolts holding the adapter on where the earlier blocks use 1/4in bolts

I never knew that. I thought all Chevy V-8's 68 & up had the spin on filters. So, according to what you are saying, GM made 2 different bypass valves---one with 1/4" bolt holes and one with 5/16" bolt holes ??? If thats the case, then there's your answer Emmett.

Check the size of the bolts that hold the bypass valve onto the block. 1/4" bolts have 7/16" heads and 5/16" bolts have 1/2" heads.

By Cow Block, are you referring to the W-head 348-409 engines?

I've never heard the term Cow Block ever used in California. Is it a regional term?

Very possible. Here in New York, they were always known as cow blocks.

'Cow block' same same as 'Pig Hauler' is what we in the midwest refer to as a 348-409.
You got a big truck around here you haul grain, pigs or cows.
