I am looking at a 66 Roadster that was originally a 427 car, that now has a 71 corvette 454 in it. It has vin # 1676 so does that qualify it as a early big-block car. I think I read that B.B. Roadsters with vins between 1000 and 3000 were built with hood support on the passenger side. It has big block motor mounts, large sway bar and radiator and support. Large Fuel Line too. The max Oil presure gauge is 80psi,Tach is yellow lined between 63 and 65 and Red lined between 65 and 70.
What is the max pressure on the oil gauge? Where are the yellow and red lines at on tach for a 66 big block roadster.
Based on what I recently learned, you can search for the following items as well to verify that it is a BB car:
- Rear half shaft retainers, BB cars use seperate bolts with a cap that is similar to a main bearing cap in a motor. Small blocks cars use a simply u-joint with two nuts (stamped / formed piece)
- All 66 BB had transistor ignition therefore if you look on the driver side up near the head light you should see three drilled holes for the transistor box or if you are lucky, the box is still there.
- BB had a different throttle arm than the small bocks
- The rear end has stamped numbers at the bottom of the case, if you can retrieve these numbers, it will state the motor and the HP of the car.
could anyone describe the throttle arm i am having the same issue with a car that is missing the motor, I have also heard that there is a difference in location of the heater hoses in the firewall can anyone verify that. Also a guy gave me a printing of something he found in a book which lists rearend codes and in 65 the big block cars all had thir own specific rear end code . i dont know if the cranky guy that has the car will let me get under there and look though.
Another thing to look for is the radiator overflow. On a BB, the bag is located on the driver side on the inner wheel well. Also, I think the hood support is suppose to be on the passenger side for a BB, not on the driver side.

The Throttle arm coming out of the firewall tunnel on small blocks faces forward..the carb rod connection is at the front
The Big Block arm stands up or curves straight up and has a small notch cut out of it.
Go to Long Island Corvette supply and search for the rod..They will list the differences and application for all 63 67's arms.
The 390hp didn't have T.I. standard, although it was available as an option; it was a mandatory option on the 425hp L-72. There's no difference in heater core nipple locations between SB and BB, and no midyear Corvette ever had a radiator overflow bag. All '66 BB cars used copper/brass radiators with the cap on the radiator and no separate expansion tank, and all SB cars had aluminum radiators with separate expansion tanks. All BB midyears had specific rear end codes, different from SB cars with the same ratios (because of the bolted yoke caps). '66 BB axle codes were AT, AU, AZ, FA, FB, or FC, and all were Posi.
