2x4 intake manifold shiny or dull? Picture
I need to know the correct color and texture for a 57 2x4 Aluminum manifold. I have 2 to choose from, one is completely matte and the other has a slight sheen to it, see picture. Which is correct? By the way, the 6-1299 carbs ( on the right of the picuture) will be for sale eventually.

No expert here, but I wold say the one on the left. The one with the sheen appears as if someone decided they were going to attempt to polish it, started smoothing it out and gave up.

These EARLY alum manifolds WERE NOT a dull finish like the one on the left. Although, they were not REAL shiny, but they did have some sheen to them. The one on the right is more correct than the one on the left. Restoring the correct finish on these early manifolds is kind of subjective. BUT, ABSOLUTELY, a glass beaded finish (even though it looks very good) is not the same as original. This is just one example of what is and what is not excessive when putting these old cars together. There can be NO QUESTION that a nice glass beaded manifold (or other part) looks MUCH nicer than an ole nasty, discolored one. Attention to detail and good taste is what makes the difference between a nice car and a so-so car. How far should you go with correctness (in my opinion) is not the question. The question is, how far do YOU want to go. Unless your goal is NCRS Top Flight (and that is perfectly fine), do it your way. There is NOTHING wrong with a Top Flight car, I love 'um! But I also have a VERY strong appreciation for a nice car that has had lots of thought and effort put into it to personalize it (and over the years, I have seen some hideous personalized cars that had as much invested in them as a Top Flight car!!!!).

The one on my 60 (and it's original and NEVER been touched) looks EXACTLY like the one on the right. The one on the left looks like it has been blasted with a media that left a very dull/flat finish.

Pretty smooth for a sand cast (?)
Front of thermostat area and just to the right of #6 intake runner almost look to have cartridge roll marks on them. Interesting

The one on the right has been "worked" a little; sand castings weren't that glossy. Although it might draw a two or three-point deduction for finish deviation in judging, I prefer its appearance and it would be easier to keep clean than the one on the left.
