I have a 327/300 that probably has over 80,000 miles on it. When I first start it up and occasionally when I get on it, I get some blue smoke. For some strange reason, twice this past summer I would be driving, come to a stop, look in the rear veiw and see alot of smoke. I would then drive a minute or so and it would stop.
I did a compression check today with the engine at operating temp. I got 180 pounds give or take 5 pounds on ALL cylinders. This was after 5 engine rotations on each. The first rotation it went up to around 80 the next 120, and by the third it was at 180.
Someone told me it was probably the valve seals and that the rings where probably OK. I would love to have the complete engine rebuilt but I just can't afford it this winter.
My questions are:
1. Do you think it the valve seals?
2. If so, Do you think I could get away with just doing the heads.
3. Or should I just wait until I can afford to do the complete engine.
More than likely you need to replace the valve seals. This is a fairly simple proceedure that is usually done without removing the heads provided the valve guides are not worn excessively. If I were you, I would just replace the valve seals at this time.
If your heads have not ever been touched, i.e., original seals, it may be wise to take one with you to the parts place in order to get the correct same configuration.
Probably valve guides more than seals. At 80m miles why not just pull the heads and get new guides, better type seals, and a good valve job. A good winter project.

Definately the valve guides. Get the heads done and you'll be just fine.
