Default Caliper paint?

I am replacing the seals in all of my calipers on my 66 and since I just bought a new sandblaster I
thought that I would blast them clean and paint. My question is should I paint them or leave
them? if paint, what paint to use? Also my car never stopped the way I thought it should and
have been told that I may have brake pads that are for power brakes and to try non power brake
pads. However Paragon and others don't provide a choice. Any info on this would be helpful as
well. Thanks to all, SVX

Uhhhh never heard that there was a difference between pads for a power brake car vs a std setup.. As for paint correct is black but I've painted mine silver high temp. Look good and I touch em up every year when I rotate em.. Dave...

For paint, I use a black stove paint, it is a sort of semi-gloss/flat shade made by Rutland Products.. brushes on and leaves no brush marks.

I have noticed that the Eastwood Co has paint specific for calipers in an assortment of colors. You can look them up @ www.eastwoodco.com

I am not sure I would take a bead blaster to them if they are assembled. I would fear getting particles inside. You might be able to tape them up or protect them some how.

I used rust-oleum silver paint, and a small brush to do mine on the car.
Took forever, but what else do I have to do.

Get yourself a set of organic pads just like what came from the factory. Don't use metallic pads they are not needed on a C-2 or C-3 plus depending on what wheels are on your car they will stay cleaner looking using organic pads.

By the way I just use a can of Krylon semi black paint on my calipers. High heat may be better but I never had a problem with regular spray paint.

auto stores sell "caliper paint" in different colors. don't know what the diff is except it appears to go on pretty thick.

When I ordered my calipers from VBP I asked if they could paint them the correct semi-gloss black. They did and no extra charge.

I tried the stuff from eastwood and mine turned out like crap even though I did a ton of prep work. I ended up learning how to rebuild my calipers and took them apart and powdercoated them. They look awesome and now i dont have to worry about them.

The Eastwood stuff didn't work huh? Well for $40 I was kind of thinking of just going down to my local auto paint store to buy a spray can for $7. So satin black is the correct finish then? I think that I will be okay to sandblast, I have to take the caliper apart to get the new seals in anyway. Plus I bought a break hone (sp?) so either way I will have to go through them before re-installing. Thanks for the input. SVX

I've had no problems with regular rustoleum spray paint. The secret is to get them very clean, use brake cleaner (with plenty of ventialtion it's very dangerous stuff).

Then a couple of coats of Semi Gloss Black will make them look not only good, but OEM. (Even tho I don't have a 'correct' car.) Also, I wonder if you can 'glue' a bleeder screw shut with that EPOXY based caliper paint?

Personally, I think the colored caliper look is better suited for the Ricers and Tuners, but to each his own, no offense.

I did the same thing and used an o'ring kit to rebuild. My calipers already had stainless sleeves. I sandblasted the calipers before I took them apart. blew them clean, cleaned the internals with brake fluid and put in the new pistons and seals. Reassembled with old bolts and painted with black VHT caliper spray paint. Then I replace the old bolts and bleeders with the new stuff and put back on the car.
Everything looks and works great!

However: this takes quite a bit of time. I figured I saved ~$200 at most. my labor is free. If your calipers aren't sleeved, do yourself a favor and just exchange them for new rebuild stuff..

do you have an impact gun? if not, you might want to loosen the bolts that hold the caliper halves together before you take them off the car. they are tight! ~150 ft/lb? while trying to hold a loose caliper isn't going to happen, without an impact

I used Rustoleum BBQ black paint and it seems to be durable, takes the heat OK, and has a semi-gloss finish.
