Default Cant Identify Engine?!!?

I have a 71 which has the normal engine block ID, example:

Engine ID Code Example: V0101CLJ - (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)

My father just purchased a 64 which Im almost positive does not have the original engine. I havnt actually seen the car because were on opposite coasts but he gave me the block number over the phone.

I can not figure out anything about the engine with this number?? 0EA138507

This is the number located in the front of the engine just in front of the head, passenger side.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Could it be CE instead of OE? That may explain the number. I do not believe the CE designation was used in 64 so it would be a later model replacement engine.

He first told me it was a C then came make with a magnifing glass and said, no, its a 0 not a C.

If you look at the first three letters as a suffix not a prefix, like it is, then it would be a 1980 305.

But the Block ID is as listed in my first post.

???????????????????????????????

You really can't read that as a suffix code. It's probably a CE 350 if I had to take a guess. That would be the most likely interpretation.

Please have him look at the upper rear of the block for the casting number. If it ends in 010, then I believe the block is a 350.

The block casting number is on the driver's side on the rear flange, and the block casting date is on the passenger side in the same area; that will tell you when the block was cast, but the original configuration will only be evident if you tear it down.

Thanks for the info!!

Does the Block ID number mean anything to you? The number on my 71 tells me alot but in this case I cant find anything anywhere to tell me how to decode the number on this 64.

Thanks,

Nope, it's either an oddball "CE" number or a rebuilder's code; it's not a production engine plant stamp.

Front Block ID: 0EA138507 or CEA138507
Casting number: 3970010
Casting date:B171

Below is what I found after receving the casting info. I still cant figure out the FRont Block ID???

Web Site 1:
3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4

Web Site 2
1968 3970010 327 - - 2 A
1969-79 3970010 350 185 370 2 or 4 car, truck, Vette
The 185 is the low HP and the 370 is the most HP block produced with that block number, probably in 69 or 70??

B171 means:
B=Feburary, 17=the 17th, 1= 197(1)

So looks like a 350 built feb 17th 1971.

What does everyone think???

Yup, 1971-vintage 350 block; doubt if you'll find a decode for the pad stamp.

Nope, not without the original engine plant pad stamp.
