Default windshield gasket

Im in the process of removing my windshield to replace the gasket. I have done this in the past on a 67camaro but its been awile.
I assume you use the rope method. Can someone give me a quick rundown of the process, tools needed ect.

The easiest way is with one of those disposable utility knifes. Extend the blade out and cut the outer flange of the gasket off and remove the glass before pulling out the portion of the gasket the fits over the body flange. Gaskets aren't that expensive and this is probably the safest method to avoid breaking the glass.

And yes, the rope method is the best for reinstalling the glass.

Be fastidious in cleaning up the windshield opening and it's also a good time to stop any rust that may be starting under the gasket.

After the windshield is back in, you should definitely go the one step farther after the glass is installed and seal between the inner lip of the gasket and the body flange with a non-hardening windshield sealer. This was discussed just a few days ago with specific products identified so should be easy to find

You might also want to go two steps further and also run a bead of sealant between the inner lip, and the glass itself. Often times when they ( the installers ) fill the gap before wrapping it around the glass, a lot squeezes out during the installation with the rope thing.

As 65air_coupe mentioned, what ever sealant you choose MUST be the non harding type.

Lastly in the car is not to be judged, I would recommend that you replace the glass with a new one. Any windshield that has been around for forty years or so, has so many small specks etched in the glass, that driving towards the West, anytime around the end of a day, becomes very challenging, if not unsafe.

That's not sounding good. I know each car is different, but the clips have never been an issue in 5-6 installations I've done.
