Hi, Im a new member and i really enjoy reading all your chat. I do have a couple of questions though, I would like to know if any body knows the type of paint they used on the birdcage of a 63 split window, and if someone has some good tricks to remove the complete front clip. Yes, ive heard this is nuts, but i think i can handle it, with good help of course. well thanks alot
The paint on the birdcage is a Zinc Chromate primer (green in color). It's available from many suppliers including Qunata (www.quantaproducts.com).
Someone else will have to chime in on the front clip removal. I haven't done one myself but owuld imagine after removing all the mounts and other attachments you would need to pry apart the seams which are held together by adhesive.
I knocked the front clip off my '63 with a good, thin putty knife and hammer.
Split the seams as you go along.
The inner cowl and forward jamb area are hard to get to. I had my windshield out which I feel is a requirement to get it off cleanly. You definitely need all the windshield trim off of there.
Just be careful and don't dig into the supporting fiberglass.
Are you planning to reuse the Frt. Clip or is it damaged beyond help? If you're going to reuse it, before you do anything, take as many measurements from as many directions & heights as you can. Also take measurements & make notes where the clip & the core support meet.
Eckler's 'glas book as an excellent section on removing & installing a M.Y. front clip. I suggest getting your hands on one of those books if you can.
