I'm in the process of building a Newman frame 63sw with lS1 & T56.Anyone have an idea what headers to start with? I have toyed with getting Stainless Works weld up kit for either an F body or C5 but am courious about ground/frame clearances. Anyone done this?
Try contacting Bill Verboon of Gold Top Restoration in Hanford CA. He had his Car Creations equiped 63 coupe at a local show and had long tube headers with an LS6. I think they were off the shelf (F-body I would imagine) because the header went back under the seat and via two 180 degree bends exited through side exhaust. I believe if the headers were one-off they would have exited straight through the side exhaust like the the ls1 headers on the 67 posted last week.
I don't have the motor in mine yet but the Car Creation LS1 midyears I've seen look like a long tube F-body headers would work. I thought about buying a cheap uncoated pair to see if they fit -- there is a market for used headers if they don't fit.
I would just order some j bends, straight pipe and collectors and build your own. You could even build a step header to get some more power.
It will be a much better system if you build them to fit your application.
If production long tube, equal length F-body headers physically fit the in his chassis/car they fit his application. CADD designed, mandrel bent headers will out perform a cobbled together set of welded up tubing sections. Why reinvent the wheel?
Eaglebusman,
I am doing a SRIII framed C2 with LS6 and T56. From what I see the long tube F body headers should work. I am going to order the 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 step up model uncoated in case I need to cut and move anything around. The coatings from the header companys typically are not that impressive anyway. I will post some shots when I get 'em mounted up, I dont know if it will help you with a Newman frame but you will at least see how they conform to the engine. There are others with LS series motors in C2's and I beleive most of them welded headers up from kits. Maybe they know something we don't Good luck!

Any serious set of headers are made from scratch!! Different lenght, diameter and collector size or style all are factors for engine combinations. All the bends are mandrel bent and if done correct are the best solution for fit and function. A step header will give huge gains in torque and horsepower. You will also be able to keep them tuned or all the primaries equal length. They are also by far the best looking headers when done correctly!!!
I want to change to a newer modern motor, 63 cp . Are you using stock hood .I considered a small block Ram Jet, but I do not think I will be able to close the stock hood . Will the LS-1 enable me to close the hood? Thanks for any advice Mike
