There have been a lot of postings over the last 6 months about putting 5-speeds in a Midyear.

Search the forum for more information. It seems like most people like the Keisler kit but some have found it a tight fit.

Some have used shaved down transmission mounts and even shorter motor mounts to get a little extra clearance.

Others have said that the rubber body mount cushions collapse over time and need replacement. After replacing the body mounts their clearance problems were solved.

I have not heard about anyone that put in a 5-speed and regretted it.

All kinds of people here. Some are real nice. Some are wise-asses (like me) and some are pretty constipated.

Don't stress about it. You'll find the information you need.

Vague questions often go unanswered or receive vague replies. Try asking specific questions and include pictures. In orther words, help the forum to help you.

It isn't personal. Around here you have to contribute to receive. Those who can't yet contribute due to lack of experience need to be respectful and appreciative in order to receive some respect and attention.

Well, for starters you need to clean up your syntax and come across in a more coherent manner. No need to bring an attitude here.

It's not that your questions fall on deaf ears only that I think those that know tend to tire of answering the same questions over and over again. I know I've started to write in Word and save some answers as it's much easier to cut and paste to the most common questions.

You are a new member but have not filled in any of your profile information. This helps the forum help you when the questions posted don't include all the information needed to help you.

As said above the forum can be your friend but the search function is you right hand man. Don't forget to check the archieves box when searching it.

To answer you latest question is...

The Richmond is a cheaper alternative however you need to have the high rear gear to make it work. The Richmond has a 1:1 5th where the Tremec has a .62 or .68 5th... That is the difference between the two. Keisler makes a kit however delivery time is slow. Richmonds can be picked up anywhere..

I was going to go with a Richmond 5 speed in my 57 but read and believed the Keisler web sit slogan *engineered to fit". I had trouble with a repeated stream of bad parts but they say "they have solved their problems". Below is a picture showing the sides of a Muncie (same size as a T-10) and a Keisler for size comparisons.

I used a transmission jack with my 4 post lift and installed it slowly so I could check clearance easily. I found a major interference problem between the Keisler 2nd top cover back hitting my floor board. My car is a solid body off and without sagging parts so I didn't want to modify it other than trimming the bottom of the ash tray and thus returned it. I plan to install a Richmond 5 speed because I know for a fact that they fit in C1's. I will need to change my rear end from a 3.55 to 3.08. You can use your stock drive shaft with a late Muncie yolk. A simple rear transmission cross member must be made. I will post a sketch when I get there. Richmond 5 speeds are available new from Jegs for less than $1900 shipped free. You will also need a Hurst or Long shifter for about $300. My Keisler was over $3200 (TKO 500) shipped. Keisler 5 speeds probably work good in C2’s & C3’s but there just to large for C1’s.
Regards, John

Thats the way I feel on this matter also, and I didn't mean to offend you, and i'm sorry if I did. Attitudes don't work well in most situations. This forum really is excellent, and it's all because of the people that make it happen. I hope the replies you received will benefit you.

I ran across the people from Keisler at the Sema show this week and they were really nice and helpful with questions. We talked for awhile about the '65 they drove on the PowerTour and what's required for installation. While I haven't bought a 5 speed, I'd consider the company as part of my decision. I believe if I had a question or problem they'd be good to work with.

Despite all the bad mouthing that Keisler has received on the forum, I’ve never had a problem with dealing with them. Did I have problems with the ship date yep, however they said up front it would be at least two months if not three.. It ended up being three months. They didn’t have and 10.5” clutches but they did have the pressure plates. They upgraded me from 10.5” to 11” clutch and pressure plate for no extra cost. The first two speedo cables they sent me were wound the wrong way both times they sent me another the next day. When the strapped type yokes came out they sent me one for a reduced price since I had C6 yoke that was available when I got my kit. Anytime that I’ve had a problem I’ve gotten a response from Gray or even Shafi himself numerous times. I have nothing but accolades for the company. This is an expensive kit however it is like any other modification or deviation from factory. Every car is different and may have lived a storied life they can not take into account for this... If you are modifying a car people should expect to modify the modifying part... Sorry to rant.. Others get on here and blast a company so I felt I could blast back with Positive feed back.. I’m not trying to attack anyone that has posted negatively because I don’t know your experience with Kiesler but I know how I have been treated by the company and it’s all been above and beyond.. Dave..

I am going the Richmond (Doug Nash) way. I have a 3:08 rear which should work great with the 1:1 5th gear. I have not driven either a Keisler or the Richmond so I cannot comment on how well either works. I am thinking the Richmond will be a more even close ratio kind of feel which is what I would prefer.

I ahve had a Doug Nash tranny in my '61 since 1980.

I had to weld up a new rear tranny mount, and mildly cut the froor tunnel to get the tranny in with the engine installed. due to the agles involved. Once the tranny was in, there were no clearnace problems and I made a simple aluminum tunnel cover to cover the 2" of fiberglas I had to remove.

If you are mechanically inclined just a little bit, geta friend to help you take the windshield off your car,and install the new dash pad yourself.

All you need a scraper,a can of spray adhesive, an exacto knife a box of non-hardening strip caulk.

it can be done in 3-4 hours.

Doug

My Keisler is great so far with one issue that I'm going to have my shop check out (I've got the TKO-600 .64 OD). There's a gear shift rattle at about 2,500 RPM's - happens at this RPM in both in 4th and 5th gear. I spoke with the tech at Keisler - it would appear that the good news is that since I'm getting no vibrations from the car other than just on the gear shift handle, it's probably just some bolts under the shifter that need tightening down as opposed to an unbalanced driveshaft or U-joint that you may have read about in other posts regarding this subject.

I also did not have any fit problems but it was installed when the body was off for other work, so my situation is not like most of the installs with the body on. The shop did not have to shim it or anything so my body did not have any sagging.

Some have had some serious complaints about Keisler on this Forum, while others have sung their praises. In defense of them, it does appear that they're addressing issues that have cropped up within the last year such as the driveshaft issue, and they really do seem to attempt to correct technical issues and improve the product. You also need to be realistic about the delivery date - assume it's at the end of their range and you won't have any surprises. It's a popular product and they apparently are a bit hamstrung by how many units that Tremec can ship to them. But their turnaround time after receiving the unit from Tremec is typically quite good - one to two weeks unless someone from Keisler wants to correct me here.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

SMR and Youwish2beme -

Thanks for stepping up guys. It's great to hear from happy customers. It's just fact of life that a happy customer may speak up from time to time, but a grumpy one will open his mouth every chance he gets.

Just a little update:
1. Keisler Engineering now ships most kits within 3 weeks.
2. We now stock a floor height restoration kit which installs quickly.
3. We have just unveiled our new shifter tower which shifts even better than before!
4. We have changed speedo cable suppliers.

Thanks again guys. We're glad we could help you out.
