Hello,
I am looking at a 1965 Vette, 327, 300Hp and the owner said that he has the wrong temp sensor on and that the origional temp gauge in the car will swing up over 220 deg and then back down to 180 deg. He said that the engine runs fine and that he does not think the engine temp is changing but that this is caused by not having the correct sensor in the block. What do you think?
Thanks,
Dean
Might be true as replacment senders are notorioius for their inaccuracy. One must ascertain the true temparature with an IR thermometer aimed near the T stat housing.
Sounds more to me like the thermostadt is staying closed till it gets to 200 or so and then opening. Senders are thermistors that change resistance with change in heat. There isn't any reason one would go up like that and then change resistance back down unless the temp changed. Even if it isn't the right sender it wouldn't do that.

The sending unit isn't causing that problem. The engine temp is changing for some reason. Whatever that temp is. It may not even have a thermostat in it and your actual temp swing might really be say 160-190. The difference between actual 190 and 220 indicated might be within the sending unit.
I think it could be possible that it's the sender. However- what is he asking for this car? $25-40,000? Tell him to go get the $20 (or less) sender and put it on and prove it. Takes 5 minutes to change it. Just my .02.
Back when I had a SB in my car you could watch the thermostat open and then shut down again in the first few miles of expressway driving. The themp guage would swing wildly if you ran it up to 55 right after backing out of the driveway. Three city blocks to the on ramp.
Thanks for the info. It seems that either issue would only cost me about $25.00. When I call him back I will confirm that temp the stat is. I like the idea of using an IR thermometer to check, I have one I can take with me if I look at the car. Does anyone know what temp sender should be in this car? Again, it is a 65, 327, 300HP, no AC. Thanks,
Dean

My `65 did the same thing. The sender had been installed with thread tape. Removed the tape and the problem went away. Appearantly, as the engine warmed up expansion would cause it to lose ground and further expansion resumed ground.
