Default Upgrade Cam

If you wanted to upgrade a stock 66 427/390 with a better cam than original what would you put in? I love the sound of a solid lifter, any suggestions?

I don't know what you consider as "better" but why not try the 427/425 cam? It will work perfectly with your engine.

You may have to change valve springs, Not sure about that but I know several people that made a direct replacement like this in '65/'68.

Crane makes a blue print grind of the old L-72 stick...Summit Racing has them for around $120 bucks and I think the kit was around $250. You will have to machine a oil groove in the rear cam journal or up grade your rear cam bearing to 67 and later design. If your engine is in the car would be best to just machine the groove. Buy a quality timing chain and gear and for sure get the matched set of valve springs.

I've been using Crane #133802 in all the 390hp or 400hp 427's . The sound is very close to factory, maybe just a little more bump at idle. If it's out of stock, I'll use Crane #134242. This cam you will notice or at idle than the #133802. Neither of these cams are real choppy at idle. They will sound a step or two above stock. I had a '67 400hp that I used the #133802 in, and you mashed the throttle 1st gear, 3500rpms and the tire(radials) would bust loose. It was a fun car to drive. JUST MY OPPINION!!!!

#133802 222/234 @ .050 .529/.525 lift
#134242 226/236 @ .050 .534/.553 lift
