Looking to have my 327/300 rebuilt so that it looks stock but has a little more bone in it. I live in Southern California (around LA) and was wondering if any of you have any experience with engine shops in this area that you would recommend.
If you don't get a response here, post in the Regional forum and maybe the Engine Mods forum. There is a shop in Ventura that was recommended by a buddy with a C5, and I will see if I can get their name. Also, Dick Guldstrand's shop is in The Valley (912 Chestnut St Burbank, CA 91506, Phone: 818-558-1499) and I'm sure they do engines still.
All that said, if this is an original block, you might want to consider storing it and building a fun engine that you can thrash and not worry if you throw a rod or put a hole in a cylinder wall. Other than the "road draft tube" the 327 block has that the later block do not, you can make them look pretty close if you want. You could use the same heads (ported) and intake (extrude honed) that will support gains from a built small block. You could even build a 406 or larger stroker from the 400 block and get lots of torque.
Again it was a new Corvette, but he was really happy and said that they treated him really really well and fixed some issues that "experts" had trouble with. I don't remember how much power he gained (blower equipped C5) over the tune he had before, but it was a lot.
