Default 1966 dash pad replacements

I need to replace the dash pads on my 1966 roadster. Short of finding some NOS pads, I woud like to hear who has the best appearing, best quality replacement pads. Resto people tell me Mid America's texture is too "grainey" on their pads. Al Knoch's are supposed to be more correct appearing but still not quite identical to the originals. For NCRS judging purposes is this an area that will cost you points or is the finite texture differences more of a personal thing. Obviously you try for perfection but if factory pieces are not available, what is the best plan B.

I managed to end up with both Mid America and Al Knock pads when I was in the process of replacing mine. The MA pads seemed a little overrly thick in x-section and padding to me. I thought the AK pads looked closer to original. I did have a problem with the AK pads not having a great fit on the inside edge where the center of the frames breaks over to the radio speaker. It seemed they were grinding a edge to the foam on the pads edge, where the pad fits in the slight dash frame recess, but overcompensating. After going through a couple sets I finally decided to live with it as it's not real noticeable. This was about 10 years ago and they may have changed some.

Thanks for the information really appreciate you sharing your experience. I probably will end up with the Al Knoch pads. My body is off and the dash assy. is out but am getting close to the point where you have to decide and go forward as other parts of the project are hung up till that stage is done. Tom R
