Default Interior paint question

got all the interior panels that needed touching up repainted and ready to go back in the car. i'm just waiting for the kit of interior screws that I ordered to replace all the screws with new ones.

BUT....... I have a spot about the size if a fifty-cent piece on the headliner that is bad and needs touching up. Do I lightly spray the same black SEM 39143 Trim paint to touch that up, a different paint, an interior dye, or what? I'd rather try to avoid having to spray the entire headliner if possible but i will if nessecary but would rather try to just fix this one spot only if I can.

thanks for any help

Barry,
I think I would use a spray on dye. Clean the surface with a good solvent then touch up. I'll be painting and doing interior next year so keep good notes.

By the way, I enjoy reading all your posts as well as everyone elses.

Thanks

Default Interior dye

Barry, the interior dye works real good if you are keeping it the same color.Be very careful on the prep work,Some solvents will screw up the vinyl.Bob W

I agree that the dye is the way to go. You will probably have to spray the whole headliner to get it to match, though if it's black it might blend in ok.

ok, thanks guys. I guess dye is definitely the way to go than.

yep, black is the interior color but color matching for a consistent and uniform look is still my biggest concern.

I've never used interior dyes before. where is the best place to get them? A local paint supplier? one of the main parts vendors like Paragon? Eastwood?

If you just want to fix the small area - get a can at the local parts store, Wal-Mart or where you bought the SEM. I don't think there is a big difference in manufacturers. Its all in the prep work and for such a small area it should work fine.

Just my opinion. Saves you shipping charges, etc...

Barry,

If you are going as far as you are with the general restoration, why not just replace the headliner with a new Al Knock liner? They don't cost that much, and after you end up buying the paint prep and dyes, you probably will not get a good match and be dissappointed and most likely end up buying a new one anyhow....see if Santa will bring it?

Collin

funny you replied to this, I just sent you a PM.

I really don't want nor can afford a new headliner right now. The headliner is in great shape, pretty much perfect, except for this one small spot.
If I can touch up just this great would be perfect, if I have to dye the entire headliner completely to get it to match I will though.
In either case it's going to be MUCH easier and less expensive than replacing the headliner.

I called my local PPG supplier that I got the SEM paint for the other panels for but they don't have a reference to the proper shade of black for 1965. I see Paragon have the interior dye in black so I'm hoping that since they specialize in '63-67's it's the proper shade.

Corvette America has a match chart for dyes, but call Al Knock, he is the man and can help you out, they most likely will sell you the dye.

When it comes to interiors, Al is the king...ask to talk to DALE, he really knows his stuff and can provide you the correct shade...remember that sun fades over the years.....but knowing its the headliner, and you a fixing a very small part, most likely you will not be able to notice since its never in direct light....call Knock...

that's a great idea, thanks.
I know Dale as he is who I dealt with when I had them redo my seats at Carlisle this year. Also, Dale just sent me a call tag thru UPS because they have to redo one of them again as it didn't come out right and I just sent it back to them.

i'll call or email Dale regarding the dye in the proper shade of black .
