sorry, did a search but didn't find the answer on this........
i want to repaint the shifter console plate on my '65 (the piece on the tranny hump that surrounds the shifter and does back to the center armrest pad) as it has a few little nicks and scratches in it.
Would the SEM Trim Black #39143 that I used on the upper trim panels also be the appropiate paint to use on this console piece or is it a different finish requiring a different paint??
yep, I already know I'm going to have to clean it REAL well to avoid fisheyes!
Should work...also get the GOOD masking tape from the auto store. It will keep the paint from bleeding through. I painted mine and it takes awhile to mask the chrome that you don't want paint on. Pull the masking tape about 5 - 10 minutes after your last coat of paint to make a nice line. If you wait for the paint to dry...sometimes it chips and leaves a jagged line/edge when you pull the tape.
Mike, I got the SEM paint at one of my local PPG paint suppliers who carries it.
If no one local to you carries it there are various sources online you can find it at if you google SEM Paint
Is that (SEM) paint any different than the Krylon black semi-gloss (actually the can says semi-flat) #1613 paint for interiors, dash, steering column etc?

I painted my 67 console with Krylon and was not satisfied with its durability. I have heard SEM has better durability and will be repainting my console in the next few weeks with SEM.

P.S. I will remove all the old paint first. (Just in case someone was thinking I would paint over the original. )
ricks327 - Are you sure that you want to remove the paint ? Sometimes leaving the original paint serves as a wonderful primer base. I cleaned mine very well and sprayed it with Krylon. No problems yet. Not even from the heat from the tranny that I was worried about. If you strip it, make sure you get a good primer coat on it. It is difficult to get anything to stick to chrome.
