Dropped the 406 in the 57 today
Well I finally did it! Took all the matching #'s out and put a 550 hp 406 in the 57.
I've been gathering parts for the last few months and it all came together today.
I've got it all bolted in just a few more odds and ends and I'll be firing her up tommorrow night. Got to work during the day :mad
I can't wait to fire this bad boy up!! :D :jester :chevy
Here are some details on the engine
406, 30 over. Balanced and Blueprinted (internally balanced)
CROWER Forged steel crank
5.7 Crower rods
Wiseco forged nitrous pistons
Comp Cams solid roller 296/300 duration..........630 lift
Dart 215 heads
Crane roller rockers
Fluidampr,850 Holley,Complete MSD ignition,Hooker Super Comp headers,Moroso oiling system,Centerforce dual friction clutch,Victor Jr. port matched.
I think thats about it.
What do think? 550 HP,2800 lb car Any 1/4 mile guesses?
Think it will take my C-5?

Hey Duntov,
Sounds like a real animal that you're building. Got any pics???
I'm just finishing the reassembly of my 350 which should be fairly quick but your's sounds dangerous.
Good luck and enjoy!!

well with stock tires i'd say 13's. with slicks i'd say 11's. So what tires does it have? What gear? Sure don't need a steep gear with that set-up. Too much power to beat a c-5 unless it can hook up.

make sure you lock tite the water pump bolts because the motormount works the bolts loose and you have a water leak. we always did this back in the 50s with our race corvettes.

Drilling the mount and front of block and installing a couple of dowell pins insures no movement here and prevents bolts from loosening and gaskets from developing water leaks. I use one 5/16" dia. dowell pin on each side at water pump bolt pads. :smash:

 Your living our dream :D I always was afraid of the cooling issues of the 400. Hell I did not even build a stroker. I have had the same ideas thought execpt without the frame mods. There are already good guesses as to your expected 1/4 so I need not say anything. Will it take the C-5? :smash: :smash: If it hooks at all it's toast. :smash:

Re: Dropped the 406 in the 57 today (Duntov-097)
I did the same thing to my 56 a couple of years ago, except, I didn't go with a 550hp 400. I stayed with a moderately built 406 so that it would be very streetable and still use the stock radiator. So far, no problems. I built it with about a 10:1, kept the stock 400 heads, 5.7 rods, .480 lift hyd cam and I'm running a highly modified Rochester FI (it's one of the ones cut in half by Bill Thomas/Hayden Proffitt years ago, heavily ported and welded back together).
What did you use for crankcase ventilation and valve covers?
I drilled a big hole in the rear of my 400 block into the lifter valley and plumbed and fabricated a road draft tube. Then I took apart the baffled can which goes into the lifter valley, stuffed it full of stainless steel wool (the stainless pads used for scrubbing pots and pans), welded it back together and drilled and tapped a hole in the block to hold it in place. I also use a machine shop which can plasma spray weld cast iron. So I had them weld, drill and tap bosses to the exhaust side of the heads for staggered bolt pattern valve covers so that I can use 9 fin valve covers.
Last year I took it to the strip, just for the heck of it, set up just EXACTLY like I run it on the street, with street tires, and it ran mid-13s/102. Of course, as you would expect, it NEVER hooked up. So I would say, set up properly, to run the 1/4, yours should do 11s fairly easy. I don't know if you are running a 4sp (I am) or auto. But as you know, for really good, consistant times, an auto is the only way to go. I don't have and don't want any cars with an auto tranny. But if I were serious about being really competitive at the strip, then I would run an auto.
