Bill Mitchell, who was an avid deep-sea fisherman, came up with the name in the early 60s.

Ive always thought the car was designed around the idea of a sting ray or shark. Without a bumper I think mid years look a little sting ray-ish and starting in 65 the fender vents look like gills. Just my $.02.
I've always thought it interesting that these Corvette's have two names though, Almost as though it is the make and model. Corvette Sting Ray rather than Chevrolet Corvette. As far as I know the word Chevrolet doesnt appear anywhere on my car and you have to look real close to find a bow tie embedded in the crossed flags. Its seems that the car was marketed that way to be its own car. Can any shed any light on this.

some of the early chevy adds for corvettes have Stingray on them but chevy never put the emblems on the 68 corvette. I don't know why. but then for the 69 model year thay started to use the name Stingray again. but for this time they made it one word. but then again 69-76 corvettes the stingray name doesnt mean anything at all.

unfortunatley from 69-76 the stingray name does mean something. Everyone i know thinks a sting ray is a C3 only. I literally have to show them a picture for them to know what a mid-year sting ray is. sad...why couldn't they leave the name with 63-67. Just the other day I met someone who had a stingray...yaeh a 1974 pos.

yeah I am getting tired of that too. every time some one says well my _________ had a stingray or sting ray, well I say what body style 63-67, or 69-76, they give me the strangest look, like I am some sore of smart azz, then they change the subject
