Let me start by saying I drive my 63 roadster daily. Some of these beautiful blue sky days get a little chilly with the top down and I can't bear to put it up. So on comes the heater and it doesnt do much. I don't feel anything with the **** pushed in. I can hear it but don't feel any air movement out of anywhere. With it pulled out I can feel it coming out of the defroster. Still not very strong or warm. Are the heater in these cars weak or do I have something wrong. Thanks, Dennis
You either don't have water or air flow thru the core, or air flow thru the heater box, or both.
Solve your air flow problem first, then once that is blowing good, check for temp.
GM cars in general have good heaters,a s long as air can get to/thru the core, and there aren't a bunch of air leaks between the heater box and the outlets.
Thanks Doug. This is my first Vette and I love it but have a lot to learn. Where do I start in my evaluation of the blower? like I said I can hear it but it is weak.
Thanks
Dennis
Hard to 'splain. You should get an Assembly Manual. Basically, within the heater box are a series of flapper doors. Pull the defroster...the door shifts and air goes to the windshield. Keep it closed...air comes out down by the floor and by the Lt. and Rt. radio panels.
Take off the radio side panels. Look around. Might have leaves, mouse nests, something plugging things up. You might have to resort to removing the entire interior heater box assembly.
Is the heater core hooked up or is it bypassed? If you've got no hot water flowing through the core, you'll get no heat. Chuck
Another bugaboo on the 63 heater box is the mechanical linkage on the box itself. If original, it is a cam type operation and when you pull the **** out do it in a "crisp" manner. Don't try to rip the cable through the rear of the car but when you move the heat/defrost cable don't finesse it. Same when you push it in. You are operating a door on a hinge pin down inside the inner box and if you are lazy on the cable operation it will not move fully to the position you are wanting.
Heater operation requires use of BOTH *****; the "Fan-Temp-Pull" **** increases heater output air temperature as it's pulled out, but you won't get any heat unless the "Air-Pull-Def" **** is pulled out to its halfway "detent" position, which admits outside air to the the heater box. From the halfway "detent" position to all the way out, that **** changes function and diverts heater air output to the defroster. Check the heater operating instructions in your owner's manual.
I could be wrong about a 63 , i had one years ago but I cant rember if it was the same as my 66 ,which has a 3 speed switch .This switch on my 66 has given me trouble,, in it only worked on low speed ,because of a broken wire on the blower motor under the hood ,the part that the wire is on looks like a condenser . Once I fixed it and got all 3 speeds I had all the heat I needed . I would turn the heater blower on with the car off and make sure you have 3 speeds before I started taking the heater box etc. apart . Hope this helps . jeff
