Default No, not another sidepipe question!?!?

Ok, I've done some searching on the archives, and I read some old post on the different types of sidepipes on the market, but I still have some questions. I am looking for just a general comparison for some of that have heard all the different types that are out there. Sorry if this but bare with me on this one....

I am down to having to make a decision on my 67 L89 project. I am getting the final assembly done for the initial startup, and ran into a snag with my old pipes that came off the car. The passenger side is fine, except for having to weld on the new stainless tip. But the driver side is all banged up. The pipe on the driver side was welded in several spots and doesn't line up at all. Because of the previous repair and welds, it kicks out a little too far coming out at the bend under under the quarter panel and pushes the cover out too much, and then it's about 2 inches too far back at the rear mounting spot. The mounting hole by the rear tire is positioned directly below the large hole in the frame where the mounting bolt is supposed to be positioned and then slid into place for final mounting. Does that make sense? Basically, I think the geometry of the pipe has changed so much that it has been pushed back too much to work. With the new tip slide in place, it almost touches the driver side rear tire and you can't slide the mounting bolt forward in the keyhole, it just hands and falls out of the larger hole.

So, I am thinking of new replacement pipes. I am considering either a set from Allen's, or Sweet thunder.

Finally, here' s a question in all of this... Does anyone have some sound clips of the these two different pipes? I know they both have sets with slightly larger ID than the stock pipes, so that will help with this motor. I am just not sure how large to go, or which one to choose.

I have Youwish stopping by tomorrow night to look it all over and provide some insight on it too. I think another set of eyes will help out and he has alot more knowledge on this than I do.

Thanks for reading my novel and providing some feedback.

Rob

I've got the 2.25" sweet thunder on mine. Way too freeking loud, so I put in a small baffle at the header to sidepipe joint. Still loud but liveable now. Revs freely....I can email you a sound bite off another site if you want.

Dave, quick question...Did you go with the alum or the stainless?

Thanks for your feedback.

I have the 2.5" Sweet-Thunder pipes on my 65 396. They are LOUD, but I have heared countless times I have the best-sounding Corvette people have ever heard.

They are not for the meek and are of excellent quality. I have the Aluminum ones.

Harps, I put a pair of 2 1/2's from Allen's on a couple years ago, IMHO, they're too loud on long hills, alongside barriers, and when I get on it...I'm still trying to find a way to quiet 'em down a bit

My Allens are also pretty loud. Typically the larger the pipe size, the louder they will be - so the GM pipes will run slightly quieter. And, the more compression and more cam you have the louder they will sound.

I am running 2.5" Sweet Thunder insert's and they're just right for me. They should change the name to Rolling Thunder! It's a gas to see people turning around to see what's coming a block or more away. O.K., every once in awhile it's someone that disapproves, but when they see the car, they smile and wave!

Rob you've heard mine and mine are the Allen's 2.5 SS pipes. They are louder than stock but I love em. I asked the owner about it and he stated yep they're loud but with bigger pipes you get more flow and higher decibels... As for the ting.. I don't have it but I know what that sounds like. Mostly you hear that on Camaro's, Chevelle's and Nova's.. I don't know why mine don't have the tinny sound... Dave..

Man, I am sure that puts a huge smile on the face.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I am cool with loud, so that doesn't really bother me. In a perfect world, it would be great to have everyones cars lined up side-by-side to compare. Now that would be sweet!

Good information - hate to "tag" the thread, but I have a 66 L79 and the correct GM sidepipe ID is 1 3/4 - Motor is fresh, we lowered the compression, but otherwise stock spec's - I can get the 2 1/4's and I also am looking at Sweet Thunders - will I have to anything to address the increase flow? Seems to me that I would have to sweeten the carb up? OR, should I just stay with the stock ID? Opinions? Thanks, Ron
