Default Problems locating 62 frame serial number

In and earlier thread I explained that my 62 steering column sent for re-build was lost with the VIN tag. With much advice from forum members on where to locate the serial number on the frame to prove to DataTag the car is legitimate my mechanic and I went at it today.

We removed the driver's seat and had to drill out three of the body mounting bolts on the left side to try and lift the body far enough off the frame to be able to clean it and see the number. After getting about an inch and a bit more of clearance we scrapped, sanded, and searched. We used WD-40 as suggested but could find nothing on the top of the frame between the X members and under the driver's seat. There is a removable plug in the floor that we hoped was there to view the number. It is about an inch and half in diameter, but no number below.

We now have the cleanest frame top you can imagine down to the metal but no number is visible. Anymore ideas without removing the whole body?

Thanks,

Kookie

The number will be along the outboard edge of the main frame rail, about even with the seat, and stamped again about 12" forward of that location, and will look like the photo below. If there aren't any numbers, the frame may have been replaced in the past with a service frame.

John has given you very good information. As he mentioned, it should be near the OUTSIDE edge, on the top of the frame. It may, and it may not be exactly where he has described, but it will be SOMEWHERE along the top, outer part of the frame, between the area where the forward end of the rear leaf spring attaches to the side of the frame and the area of the frame below the clutch/brake pedals. This is about a 4ft length of frame where it could be stamped. Its there, keep looking, you'll find it, let us know when you find it and exactly where it is.
Also, it is possible, but HIGHLY IMPROBABLE, that it could be toward the inner edge of the frame on top.

Thanks guys, but there are no numbers there. We cleaned it down to the metal and kept checking as we removed rust, dirt and grime. we cleaned the entire section between the X members on both sides. We can see that the body mount rubber shims are original and it appears that this frame has never been off this car. I will call the guy at DataTag and see what happens.

thanks,

Kookie

Default huh

Kookie..

It should be there. I found mine on the outer edge frame rail. It was almost in line with the shifter.

DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bet that it is there somewhere. You were probably just an inch away from it.
Also, on my 56 (as well as other people's cars) the VIN was stamped twice. The second stamping was further back on the frame.

Mine is on the inside edge of the frame rail (1961) just under the driver seat. There may be an outside edge number also (double stamp thing I read about), but I have not verified if it exists.
