Default Help! Door hinge adjustments

Do the hinges at the body mount adjust in and out. I am having
trouble fitting the drivers door flush with the body and that is
without shims on the door side. The manuals don't show anything.
Appreciate any help. Also thanks to the advice here I am replacing
the headlight piviot ***** with nylon type and new seals.
Thanks again.

I take it that you are talking about a midyear. The hinges at the front pillar do not adjust for the most part. You can shift them up or down very slightly, since there is a little slop in the holes, but for the most part, all adjustment takes place inside the door at the hinges. The doors will move fore and aft by simply sliding the door back and forth on the slotted holes in the hinges. Likewiswe, any angular misalignment in that plane is also adjusted by moving only the top or lower hinge location. The in/out adjustment is made by inserting shims between the door and hinge until you get the correct alignment to match the body. The top and bottom locations do not necessarily get the same number of shims, you just add shims until you get the door to match the body.

If you are saying that the door ,without shims, is too far out ,proud of the body, you may have a problem. I just did my drivers door on the 66 and it is a trial and error situation with the shims . If your too far out without shims the hinge itself would have to be altered to make the door fit correctly. Did the doors fit prior to your taking them off if so they should go back without major modifications. If body work was done in between you could have trouble .Check to make sure ther isn't a shim stuck in the door itself. Good luck, Jeff

If the door is out too far from the body w/o any shims, check to see if the hinge reinforcement brace in the door is still securely rivited to the door shell. There are rivits at the front jamb of the door around where the hinges enter the door. If these appear loose and the brace is wobbling around inside, it will allow the door to sit too far out due to the slop, especially when the weatherstrip is on. These are a bear to fix but it can be done. The door needs to come off however. I bought 3/8 inch carriage bolts and ground the dome head flat and they looked exactly like the factory rivets. I then removed the rivets, slightly overdrilled the hole so the threaded part would go through and double nutted them on the inside. Some of the guys say they have been able to get something inside the door on the end of the rivet to buck them up and reset them with hammer blows on the head.

It's worth checking - it's not an unusual problem on the old cars.
