After the engine is up to operating temperature, how long do you have to set the valve lash before the engine cools down too far to use the hot lash setting?
Don't even bother setting lash hot. It is too messy and the expert opinion of Duke Williams, John Hinkley, and others smarter than me is that cast iron pushrod clearance does not change significantly hot or cold, so setting hot is an unnecessary hassle.
John and Duke have done a lot of work to come up with the cold lash settings for a stock engine but I have a solid lifter Comp Cam and CC recommends a .016 hot lash, they don't give any cold lash settings. I hesitate to use the cold lash settings that John and Duke have come up with on an aftermarket cam.
I think John & Duke's setting is inteneded to be the same whether the engine is hot or cold. That said, my comment was that you should be able to set yours at CC's specs cold. Sorry if I was confusing.
If you have iron heads, there's negligible difference between hot and cold settings; set them cold at .016", making sure the lifters are on the base circle of the cam.
If you hot-lash them (engine running), the rocker arm clips in the photo below work great - I've had them for 30+ years - made by Bob Bandimere in Denver; the ones the parts stores sell made from spring wire with plastic **** that go in the oil hole in the rocker are junk.
