I have been following a 57 fuel injection Original air cleaner element listed on eBay by Ken Hanna, owner of Lectric Limted. It sold today for $4000.01
I just can't believe what is happening to our hobby. Either our dollar is worthless.........or there is too much loose cash out there. I am woried that soon there will be no more toys to play with
Jim, I totally agree with you. I'm in the process of finishing my '66 coupe and I trying to purchase either NOS or used parts. I'm having a hard time keeping up with the prices of these parts. I wish that I bought my car twenty years ago and I hope that I have enough money to finish my car soon, before things get worse.
Fellas:
I understand and share your frustration and amazement with this phenomenon. However when and if we go to sell will we not be pleased that someone wants to throw 35, 45 or 50 grand our way?
The down side is once you get out it's tough to get back in (unless you're a trust fund liberal).
Sitting here just in from the barn with fresh POR 15 Chevy Orange on my hands.
Maybe I don't understand but what do you do with it? Just swap it in when you show the car or is it just for a trailer queen? It's a lot of money for a disposable part. I wonder what a quart of old oil would go for.
The so-called ruination of our hobby is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. We are only at the beginning of the era where the people who spent their youth wishing for a C1 - 2 or 3 Vette (or any other collectable from that era) are in a position to afford one. The spiral will end when they begin to die off. Watch the prices and look at the purchasers of some of the older collector cars at BJ this week. I have to laugh when I read posts complaining about dealers causing the run up. It's the buyer's that enable it! This (along with low interest rates) is the same phenomenon that is causing real estate in retirement areas to skyrocket. Good quality pieces will be less affected than marginal pieces, but it's the simplest of all econimic concepts at work here; supply and demand.
Perhaps as interest rates rise and if the stock markets countines to flourish (hopefully) - maybe the non-car enthusiasts who are buying will look to make money elsewhere.
I got hammered for making just such a comment about another model recently on one of our Aussie forums.
I commented that all of my hobbies and interests were being gradually taken away from me because I just couldn't afford or at least couldn't justify the expense anymore.
The trouble with places like eBay is that although great for selling stuff it gives the items so much exposure that sometimes rediculous prices are obtained thus creating similar asking or expected prices for all such sales in the future.
When I made a comment about how much I loved the particular model of car but that they were just not worth what recent sales were getting I was pounced upon and called a cry baby etc etc.
So what can I do??? well with most such things I just move onto something else and leave the car or whatever to the guys with more money than me.
I'm afraid that I refuse to become desperate and refuse to fall into the salesmans "better get it now cause it aint gettin any cheaper" routine, this may be the case but I guess I'll just have to live without it!
While eBay does tend to inflate the market overall, in my very humble opinion it more of a benefit to us all than a hinderance. To wit: if that air cleaner were not listed on eBay, most of us would not have even known it were available and definately not had the opportunity to purchase it. Granted it went for much more than I personally would ever pay, but the guy who won it probably feels differently.
To me, if I needed this air cleaner, I don't mind seeing it on eBay vs in some vendor's tent at Bloomington Gold simply because I can check eBay every day but I do not make it to BG every year due to family and work obligations. There aren't usually bargains on eBay but there is a large selection it tends to align supply with demand (even if the demand side has more money than sense).

Mark.
I refused to pay some "over inflatated" prices on these "old car parts"..I see over the years the parts are getting "worse" (junk) and the prices are going for a primo price...
I am looking for a spare tire carrier for my 63...I cant see paying $750 bucks for a "used" spare tire carrier that looks "rough or beat on"....I think its too bad the prices of these parts.make it hard for the average hard working guy to buy...

Whenever I'm thinking about bidding on an Ebay auction I calulate what it would cost me to go to swap meets, possible several meets as the first one, or the second one, or even the third meet, might not have the item I'm looking for, for sell. When you add up the gas ,motels, food, admission fees, sometimes a item that is sold at a high price on Ebay is accually cheaper. Not all of us live next door to Carlisle.
