Have a battery drain problem with the 67 427 coupe. I did the usual test of disconnecting the neg cable and using a light tested for problems. I found nothing. ONly when I turned on something in the car(lights) did the test light light up. When I hook up the neg cable I get a severe drain. I mean from full charge to nothing in less than 24 hrs !!!! Any ideas ?? As always I appreciate your help. I apologize for not posting for awhile and helping you all out as you have helped me. Much to my dislike I now travel 5 -6 days a week and can barely keep the grass mowed. WHINE ! WHINE ! WHINE !!
How old is your battery? May not be holding a charge. Even newer batteries are known to suffer sudden death. :blueangel: Check your electrolyte level. :U
...did you do anything recently to the car?...or perhaps notice anything unusual?......i dunno, check out the thread i started on battery woes, sounds somewhat like your problem....i farted around with so many things (including a new battery) that i forget what worked ...bad ground, if i remember correctly
The best thing is to put an ampmeter in series with the battery lead:
1. Determine if there is any current drain.
2. If there is current drain, start pulling out fuses one by one until you locate what fuse circuit it is in.
3. Isolate things one by one in that circuit.
Anyway that should point you in the right direction. Someone mentioned to check the alternator. That would be if you pulled all the fuses and there is still current draw, there could be a carbon path in the alternator since a shorted diode would draw LOTS of current. A bad voltage internal regulator inside the alternator could be a problem too.
Take the battery out and have it charged and load tested also.
I had a problem with my voltage regulator unit (not solid state). The field relay in the unit would not open when the ignition switch was turned off. It seems that this would let some current flow to the accessory position, but not enough to run any accessories so it wasn't obvious. This would drain my battery in one day. If you remove the cover of your regulator you can see the relay. It is the one with ine set of points. Make sure they open when you turn off the ignition.
Guys,
Sorry it took so long to reply. I have been on the road. You were right on the money. Voltage regulator was stuck !!!!! Thanks for all your help. Apologize for not giving feedback sooner.
...glad to see you fixed the problem.....i just bought solid state vr's for both cars, $20@, if i remember.......hot diggity, now i can put my certified original #'s match voltage regulators on ebay
