Default Which Thermostat?

My 62's thermostat was changed last year and I have had over heating problems from then to now. I just drove about 30 mile with no thermostat and It never got over 120 deg.. The thermostat was a 195 deg.. What should it be rated at?
I hope to drive from Birmingham to Atlanta Sat. for the Year One show at Stone Mountain.

Originally it did not have a 195. Probably 180 or so, but 160 is OK.

I'm running a 160 degree stat in my 67' but I only drive the car in good weather up to early Fall and don't really rely on the heater for heat so much. If you drive during the winter and rely on getting some heat use a 180 degree stat if not use a 160.

Thanks 180 was what I thought. But 160 sounds even better. I do not need the heater.

180 would be better to help evaporate condensation and moisture out of the crankcase. Your choice.

I was going to suggest not to run too cool. 180 or 185 seems appropriate. Remember engines were designed to run at certian temps.

Just a thought.

I'm running a 185 degree thermostat in my '64 SB and the temp gauge never exceeds 180 by more than a few degrees, occasionally, and the heater works adequately for our CT winters.

Maybe I'm lucky!

Most of us back in the 60's kept a 180 stat in our cars during the winter and changed it out to a 160 stat for the summer. A 180 degree stat is fine to use all year round in these old cars. Gm didn't start using the 195 stat until 1971 if I am correct so either of the first two should be fine. Being you live in a warm weather state I would use the 160, its your call.

180 is the wisest choice.
