Default Rear end issue?

I have been reading threads about mysterious clunking coming from the rear and I too have the problem. I also have a small leak coming from the rear somewhere.. makes about a silver dollar size puddle overnight! What's that about? I also noticed today that around a couple corners I heard some strange noise that seemed to come from the rear somewhere.. and also I hear something that I would call a "flapping" noise when I am slowing down.. may do it all the time for all I know.. just can hear it best when I am slowing down and the engine isn't "roaring".

The clunking in the rearend is most noticable when shifting greas, and I step on the gas and the drivetrain engages .. like there is some slop of something..

I'm not a mechanic but the it could be the rear end is bad but you don't see any drips at all? Also, check to make sure all bolts are tight on not just the unit but brackets too. The "flapping noise could also be an easy fix such as replacing the u-joints. They commonly wear out if not greased but are a quick fix.

Sounds like the rubber snubber bushing on the front bracket. Oil leak is either pinion or yokes.
check this post I've got going it will shoe you a lot of pictures and if you have any questions let me know.

Default I have the same clunk too

I have the same clunk as descibed, and have also been told that it is the front mount diff bushing. I ordered a replacement last night and will update if it was the fix.

You describe the same exact noise i had in my 67 Coupe. This winter I pulled the rearend for inspection and found the front mount to be bad. It looked OK from the bottom, but the upper rubber cushion was a different story. Check this link for my complete differential removal, inspection & repair http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1284440
Good luck with your repair.
Roy

This is what the front mount looked like.

That's the Posi clutches chattering - very common symptom; drain the diff and refill with GM Diff Lube or brand-name 75W90 or 80W90 and 1-1/2 to 2 bottles of GM Posi Additive and that will usually take care of it. If it doesn't, it's time to rebuild the Posi.

Thanks for all the help... I'll check it out tonight.. while I am under there, where are the numbers on the rear? Can you see them without jacking the car?

They're stamped on the flange on the bottom of the diff housing, between the spring retainer plate and the strut rod bracket - you'll have to clean the surface to see them.
