I just purchased a 65 roadster in very nice condition but with a non original motor (nor correct). I may eventually try to replace it with a correct engine, but for the immediate future, I want to know what I'm working with.
The engine ID is T0904HC. I'm not even sure if this is a corvette engine. I don't recognize the HC code.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this engine, or know where I can reserach it. Thanks.
The HC suffix was used twice. First in '65 on a 327ci/275hp automatic in the full size chevy. Second was in '69 in a 350ci/250hp manual trans in A/F/X bodies. The casting date should tell you which you have.
5500 on the tach is too low for a 365, or 375 hp 65.
But there were some fishy codes used in 65. More than 17.
Including- HE, HF, HG, HH, HI, HJ, HK, HL, HM, HN, HO, HP, HQ, HR, HT, HU, HW.
Is block casting # 3858180?
:seeya
Yes, the block is 3858180. I understand that they were used on some '65s and have a thinner wall composition. Is this right? I believe the engine stamp is an HC (I cleaned it off to the best of ability, but it's still rather difficult to read.)
From your casting number, 3858180, I find it listed as a 327 used from '64-'67. I have your HC code listed as being used from '65-'69, rule out the last to years as the casting number was not used for these years. From '65 to '67 the HC code was used in full size passenger cars. For '65 I have it listed as 250HP, in '66 and '67 275HP. You would need the casting date to know what year it was actually used in.
