I'm ready to install an Optima battery as well, does your original battery hold down hardware still fit?

Yellow top is deep cycle (racing).
Blue top is marine.
The red top is the one to use for the street

I have a red in my 66. I did not use the org hold down. I bought one that hooks on each side of the tray and one bar goes across the top.
Worked well.

I had the red top and switched to the yellow. The yellow holds a charge longer and has the same cranking amps as the red. Both are excellent.

I used the original hold down with no problem. It's a larger rectangle than the optima battery (mine is a red top) . Since the battery hold down is held by a rectangular frame on TOP of the battery, and the terminals are now on TOP instead of the side ....the '+' terminal is kinda CLOSE to grounding out on the hold down's recatangular frame.

I arranged mine so that the battery + terminal is pushed about 1" away from the hold down frame, so that it won't ground out, I have had no problems whatsoever.

It's really nice to paint and clean that battery tray and be DONE with no more acid leaks.

Those of you with an Optima battery and a small block....since the battery is smaller, can you get it in and out without having to unbolt and move the coolant reservoir?

I was able unbolt the tank (hoses connected) ....and pull the whole mess over towards the valve covers. I could them turn the battery, and lift the battery out.

I have a ZZ SBC 350 crate engine though ....possibly a slightly different profile.

I would not want to try and accidentally pull a hose off a tank or worse yet, crack a fitting going into the heater core. Unbolting the tank is certainly the lesser of those evils IMHO.

I have a 327. Optima Red Top.

Model No. Red 75/35
Part No. 27980
CA 910
CCA 720

And yes, the reservoir had to be moved. But you shouldn't have to remove any hoses.
