Default 63 Vin #

I am looking at buying a 63 corvette.
Could someone please tell me the day and year the corvette was produced with a Vin #30837S105848?
On the engine pad it is stamped 105848 F06lRC,what day and year was the engine produced?
Thanks for the info!

Your car rolled off the assembly line Sept 17.1962. The engine was assembled June 1, 1962 .

I calculate it out to 12/29/62 for the car. What is the cast date on the block?

I am showing 12/28/62 as the day it rolled out. And yes, casting date on the engine would be helpful.

06I =June 1. The block (3782870)was used in 62,63,64 and part of 65 I believe. See if you can get the casting date as per the previous notes above. The engine seems early for the vin. Do you have a picture of the stamp?

That stamping is missing a digit - must be seven digits - four between the "F" and the "RC"; take another look at it.

John at first I thought that it was missing a digit also for the day, but then i looked it up "Corvette by the numbers" and it stated the assembly day code can be one or two digits. Then in 65-82 it must be two digits. I know you have an extensive library. Is this book an accurate reference material? On page 61 at the top. Thanks Glenn.

That's an excellent reference, and I've known Alan for many years. However, that particular point is incorrect. From at least 1962-up, all months used two digits, and the day of the month was always two digits starting in '57.

Thanks John, If there is only three numbers between the prefix and suffix a guess would be someone used Alan's book as a reference. My block in the 63 is F0305RD and it's cast B263, car was built on aprox the ides of March. Could Hal's car had such a block to build date gap due to a strike or possible strike in 62? Could you suggest any books I should buy to fill in my limited library specifically for the midyear. I have the following.
Corvette by the numbers Alan Colvin
The complete restoration Nolan Adams
Corvette Black Book
Classic Corvettes by Mike Mueller
Chevrolet Corvette Restoration Guide by Lindsay Porter
Suzy Q restoring a 63 by Cars and parts magazine
Corvettes buyers guide Richard Prince
Illustrated buyers guide Mike Antonick
Corvette America's Sports car Randy Leffingwell
The Utimate History of Corvette Trevor Legate. (nice coffee table book)
Corvette Andrew Montgomery " " " "
Assembly manuals and shop manuals for the years I own

I just want to get as much info as possible in case someone runs you off the Forum. ............

Thanks Glenn

This is a white coupe, black interior, 250 hp with PS, PB, and PW. It also claims to be one of 278 AC car.

The problem is that AC was not installed until after somewhere around 14,000. The only known early car is #50 or #55, which was owned by Harley Earl new and was retrofitted on the line.

Look very carefully at this car.

The compressor is later than '63. The ac brackets appear stamped, but may be passenger brackets, not Corvette.

It is eBay item 4642303668.

Ask for pictures of the items under the driver's dash, the radiator support, and the inner fenders.

Yes and no it is accurate. He took lots of old books and compiled the information. The information he compiled is very accurate, however, like many compilation books, there are some interjected stuff that isn't as good as the stuff copied.

The car in the auction has many issues - appears to be a "made-up" A/C car with an incorrectly cast-dated and poorly restamped engine, among other things.

Your tech book library sounds pretty complete - I'd add the applicable NCRS Judging Guide.

Thanks for the book tip John. Funny I was checking out that 63 also on EBAY and researching the numbers for the A/C and didn't even realize it was the same car we were discussing prior. I figured it was made up and dismissed it.

My supposed original '58 doesn't have 2 digits for the day of the month???

Motor is out at the engine shop being rebuilt so I can't take a photo now but here are the particulars from my records:

VIN: J58S10748
PAD: F604CR
Casting: F28

I only have the history of the car back 2 owners to the early 70s ... both were reputable folks. Previous owner got the engine with the car less the fuel unit but never assembled it or put it in the car. 2 owners ago was a relatively well known local car collector and racer named Woody Portz who removed the engine and raced the car. When I bought the car it was missing the fuel unit but I got the block, heads, etc. I've had the car about 3-4 years.

Its been a while since I did the research but I believe that the numbers worked out according to Nolands book. In looking at them now it seems that mine only used one digit for the month and two digits for the day of the month. I believe that this was consistent with 1957. Noland claims that this was true through 1959 then the 4 digit month and day stamps began with 1960. Humm.

Is this not so?

John,

Going back and re-reading the posts it appears that we are saying the same thing. Correct?

Day of the month is always 2 digit but month can be 1 or 2 digits until 1960 when it changed to 2 digits always. Correct?
