The only motors C2's had were different variations of 327's during the entire '63-'67 model years. Than halfway thru '65 the 396BB was introduced for the '65's only and than in '66 and '67 they had the differetnvariations of the 427BB.
The 409 was never offered in a Corvette but it was in other Chevy models in the early 60's
If the valve covers have "notches" it's a 348 or 409. It will resemble a M. If it's valve covers are straight then it's a small or big block. In one look you will know.
Hello: If the dipstick is on the pass side, there is a good chance
its a 409. Also look for one AFB, or 2 AFB carbs.
Also post pics if you can.

Gonna pull the heads, and have them magnafluxed, to see if there are any obvious problems. Also see if it has solid lifters. If it's got solid lifters, it's a 400hp, if not it's a 360hp??? Dont take this for Gospel, I'm a 454 guy.
Got a little more history. Its a 1962 from an Impala SS. 409 with aluminum 4 bbl intake. He believes he has the original carb, we just gotta dig in his Dad's garage in Sun City, AZ. The car was totalled years ago. He thinks it had a 4 speed floor shift manual. It was not on the column. Not a Powerglide. May have tranny still. Dipstick is on the right side. It's got the weirdest valve covers, like a big upside down M. Maybe W right side up, depends on whick way ya look at em. They are not a rectangle.
The engine ran fine with 40,000??? miles when it was pulled in the late 1960's and had a 427 installed.
Car was used for local car races in Phoenix and Riverside CA etc untill wrecked in the early 1970's.
Engine has been sitting for a LONG time. Will require total rebuild. This does not seem to have aluminum heads, but a GM aluminum intake. The Generator (not alternator) is still there, along with the distributor.
Current owner is 85 years old, his son is cleaning out his garage. Will take pics of it later this week. Dont have a price for it yet. I saw his Pop's garage, there might be ALOT of stuff in there. The old man was a GM pack rat. He never threw anything out that was going to be useable. But he's wheelchair bound now, and trying to clean out his garage before his final days. Dad and Son are not stupid, so dont expect this engine to be sold real cheap, just a fair price.
I have a 1 ton truck that I can deliver to the SW.
We are going to talk this week about a sorting party, and I may do a whole website with the various parts in his garage. He also has Buick, Caddy and oddly enough, Packard parts.
Yeah - I knew that the 396 was the first BB, didnt know if anyone ever would use a 409 in a C2....
Acutally about a year ago I posted a picture of a 409 sitting in a midyear (I forget the year). According to the picture it was pretty much a bolt in, except for the exhaust which had to be custom made, and there was a problem with the distributor, as the 348/409 engines used a unique distributor, hence no tach drive....
Well looks like from an email I got today and phone calls - this 409 is off to San Diego this weekend, finding a future home in a 1963 Chevy Nova Convertible of all things...
Guy is driving over Thursday for a closer look.
Told him I want pics when he's done. He's got alot of work ahead of him.
Engine sold for $1500.00. Old owner is happy, new Nova guy is estatic. Something for everyone...
