Default New purchase

I recently purchased my neighbors 61' Vette that he and his father had owned since 1963. In the late 1990s they changed the color from Jewel Blue to Black with silver coves and black interior. The entire drive train is original save for hoses. The car is the 230 HP model with the Powerglide. I would have preferred a manual but what are you going to do. The motor runs strong but does need to be tuned up. I have been purchasing the components for the tune up and may use the pertronix? system. The car's date code is 60M. The radiator has been replaced and I recently replaced the evaporation tank and it's bracket as the old tank was leaking. I want to rehab the susension components but do not want to devalue the car in any way. Any suggestions for a novice Vette owner? The car is beautiful and is like driving in a perpetual parade. Thanks.

Welcome and congratulations on your purchase!

My first piece of advice would be to keep coming to this forum as it is full of helpful and friendly people who can point you in the right direction.

Get a shop manual, and an Assembly Manual. Both are available from vendors such as www.corvettecentral.com. The shop manual of course details repair and maintenance procedures. The Assembly manual is what the assembly line workers used to learn how to assemble the car. It is invaluable in providing insight into how things go together (or come apart).

If you are interested in doing "correct' restoration work - that is restoring it to a particular standard consistent with how the car was originally built, then join NCRS http://www.ncrs.org/ and purchase a judging manual for 1961.

Thanks Jeff. I will be purchasing those two books. Is there anybody in the Southern California area that can take a look at my car and set me in the right direction?

Congratulations, it sounds like you will have many happy days in your future with this car.

Jeff is correct in all regards...I have always enjoy my car and have enjoyed it more since I joined this forum. There are so many nice people in this forum and they are all willing to help each other. My morning routine is now to get on the forum to see what everyone has to say...

Welcome and I hope you enjoy...John
