Dick Guldstrand on the GS "Coming off of a corner, if I could get it straightened out enough, and get on it in low gear, I could actually pull the front wheels off the ground" http://www.vintageracecar.com/excerpts/interview.cfm
Thanks for posting that!
Very
Jim Gessner has told me lots of great racing stories about DG.
And he is still in business. http://www.guldstrand.com/
The high light of my guest book is DG's entry!
I would have thought more would have responded to this one?
I mean, how many times do you get a 1st hand driving impressions from a
Grand Sport at Sebring? or L88 at LeMans?

my car couldn’t stop with him and it couldn’t corner, but geez, straight line it was over 200 miles an hour down the backside at Sebring. Oh that thing could haul, God!

Also according to Gessner, Dick held both feet on the gas when he set the
record that lasted I forget how many years in a 66 L88.
I love it. "when I was in high school, you were either a candy-foot or a race car driver". What I would have given to grow up in SoCal in the sixties. Instead I grew up in Massachusetts in the late 70s, where the hottest car was a Pinto with racing stripes.

You think that's bad- I went to H.S. in San Marino, Calif. (outside Pasadena) in 1962-1963, in the middle of the surf- hot rod craze, and then had to move BACK to Massachusetts with my parents! Was I PI*S*S*ED!!
Mass, wow, that is indeed tragic. I was actually born in LaJolla in1963. But my old man was chasing Nuclear power plant money all over the country, so we left in '64.
