Power window conversion time
I've been contemplating a power window conversion on my 64 coupe from the usual sources such as Eckler's, Zip, etc. Any recommendations out there as to which kit is better and more complete? Any installation tricks or tips? Did you go with the door panel switch route or the console mounted switches? Pics of your conversion would be appreciated.
Thanks, Allan
Other than that , the rest of the kit was fine. Came with new switch to mount in the console, as original. I just need to figure out how to drill a square hole for the switch. I have some oval drill bits, but no square ones......
But, that was 4 years ago. Maybe somebody complained and they at least test the motors before they sell them.
Here is a pic of the motor.
I don't want to go the console route for installing the up/down switch. I'm more interested in the door panel switch mounts. Anyone else chime in on this conversion?
My passenger side switch got stuck once (using momentary 2-way toggle switches), and for some reason the motor burned up before the fuse blew so now I have to tear it apart. Luckily, the set from Covette Central comes with a 3 year warranty, so they said to send in the bad motor for replacement.
I can't tell you about the conversion time, but I had a similar experience with the power conversion kit motors.
I was going to buy one from one of the corvette parts catalogs, but I started wondering about that "cutting a hole in the console" idea. I talked to my corvette service man, (who in my opinion is very good), and he said he had a brand new pwer window conversion kit in his shop. I decided to let him install it for me, however the motors on that kit looked as bad as the one in the picture above. The rest of the kit looked brand new. He said they all come that way, and showed me that they both worked like new. After installation, I have had no problems with my passenger window, however I had to bring it back 3 times for the drivers window. It kept getting stuck, in either the open or closed position, with no rhyme or reason. After the 3rd time of leaving my car at the corvette shop, I got the car home, and the window got stuck again. I decide to get in there myself, and figure out what was wrong.
The car is a convertible, and I discovered that the window was stopping either too far up, or too far low on the teeth that are located on the arm that the window track sets on (not quite sure of the correct name for that piece), and it was getting "tweaked", and jamming the motor. I replaced all the rubber stops, which had deteriorated over the years, and readjusted the stops and rear and forward tracks.
It looks like now, I have the problem solved...knock on wood.
I have been waiting to put my new Al Knoch door panels on since November when I started this whole window conversion idea. I think I might be ready now. One of the deciding factors to go with the power windows, are those door panels looks so beautiful without that hole for the window crank, I couldn't bring myself the put a hole in them!
Good luck with your conversion.
Mike
