Default Radiator/Shroud help needed.

I am restoring a '66 327", 350 HP (no AC) motor and am having trouble installing the shroud. The car came to me in boxes, so I have nothing to compare.

Purchased new stock radiator support, radiator and shroud. Am having trouble with the left upper radiator outlet fitment to the shroud. Does the radiator snout fit through the square hole in the upper left corner of the shroud? Or does the snout fit above the square hole? I can force the shroud to fit with the snout on top of the hole, but the attachment holes in the shroud and support do not match up very well. What am I missing?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ralph.

I'd imagine your '66 L79 should be the same as my '65 L76.
I have a few pictures on my website of the radiator and fan shroud out, partially installed, and completely installed if it will help you any.

hope they help you some.

Barry K's shots of his 65 fan shroud are very different than my 66.Mine is a 66 with AC. The radiator snout fits over the shroud on mine. The square is below and is important for under hood air circulation. Don't block it off. This is a shot right after the 383 was dropped in.

Barry,

The 66 fan shroud is made of plastic and is a completely different configruration than the 65. 66 and 67 radiators are mounted at a steeper angle than the 65.

Barry,

Thats just one of those subtle things about these midyear Vettes that were changed throughout the years. We are used to looking at the metal shroud in our 65's and don't have a 66 or 67 close by to compare. I've had my 65 for 15 years and I would bet if you asked me about the difference in the shrouds of the midyears 10 years ago, I wouldn't of known. That's what great about this forum, accelerationg the learning curve.

Thanks guys for the excellent responses. The photos answer the question. On a '66 the radiator snout is above the shroud and the square hole is below it, presumably for ventilation purposes in the engine compartment. I will just "adjust" my parts to fit.

As usual the Forum is the best source of information. You can look at the AIM and other sources of information, but the Forum still prevails.

It's now time to head over to Lars' to help install a performance rebuilt engine in a friends Vette. Maybe we will pick up Lars' frame from the sandblaster also.

Thanks again, Ralph

I don't think your involvement here was useless at all, you provided good info on 65 fan shrouds, and you flushed out for good solid consideration here the fact that there are differences between the 65 to 66 shrouds, which I now really only know because of your entry into this thread.

It's all good . . . .

True. And I have owned a '66 and a '65 and forgot about the differences.
