I would like to see some pics of headers installed on small blocks and the alternator set ups that take the place of the manifold mounted bracket.
Thanks
That is only 1/2 the set up. The alternator attaches to that piece, which attaches to this piece http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku that attaches to the header bolts. The second bracket is handed. Be sure to get one for the correct side, driver or passenger.
As it says in the text, you need another bracket to bolt that bracket to. The unshown bracket is fastened by the two front header mounting bolts. I've seen a couple of people on this forum say that setup is not very good, but I had it on my previous Corvette for many years and it didn't give me any problems.
I have an unknown one that isn't very robust to say the least. It's been a source of irritation on belts flying off.
I have a new one sold by Summit and suppllied by Hooker. It's a heavier guage steel and I hope will solve my problems. I also purchased new 1 5/8 headers at the same time. The bracket fits the new headers fine - why wouldn't it I guess.
If your heads are drilled and tapped for it, GM had a cast alternator mount that bolted to the front face of the head. It puts the alternator in the correct position without using any attachments to the exhaust rams horns. I used one on my '69 race car. It accommodates the left (drivers) side alternator mounting. It was an active part for GM pickups back in the late 70's, early 80's.
Much cleaner set up than the header manufacturers offering.
Thanks. Ok, ill figure out the alternator bracket delima later. Might even go with a lower mount serpentine belt assembly since i am running the original heads. Now how about some pictures of those headers??
I just went through what you are doing. It was a pain in the butt.
I have Hooker Headers so I ordered the kit they recommended. Two brackets, one attached to the headers and the bolted on to that bracket. The set up wasn't very eye appealing and didn't seam that sturdy to me. I also couldn't slide my alternator out far enough to run straight with the pulleys.
Someone suggested I go move the alternator to the other side of the car. Since I don't have AC it wasn't a problem. Ordered the alternator bracket for a 72 vette that bolts directly onto the block. Worked like a charm.
