Not sure of the proper terminology, but the center section of my 66 convertible dash needs a little paint to freshen it up - I'm speaking of the dash panel that the radio, clock, and fan controls mount on.
I could just mask it off carefully (I've already removed the radio, clock, and controls) and paint away, but this same part extends up under the windshield and around behind the dash pads - I'd never get an even coat on the whole thing and I'm worried about seeing a difference between old paint and new paint.
I'd like to take the dash out and do it the right way, but the procedure to do this is a tad of a mystery to me - is this a multi-day project that will also take multi-days to put back together? How is the dash fastened in place, anyway?
I just found several of your old posts in the archives that are very interesting to me (I didn't even know that it was possible to buy just dash skins (not the entire pad)). I'll spend some time reading through all of the info. Thanks again!
Rockford, Michigan here, by the way (just north of Grand Rapids). Boy, I sure don't see many midyears around here!
I would not remove it. I and many others have repainted ours just by masking the pads and windshield. What color is it ? Clean it well, use a tack rag just prior to painting it. Are you going to use spray paint ? Or use a paint gun ? You won't notice a difference, if you spray several light coats of a good quality paint.
