Default Dash Question: 66 Vette

Under the dash, just above the headlamp door switch, is some kind of supressor afixed to the dash cluster with a single lead, about an inch long with a brass 'u' on the end: what does this clip on to?

Also, the steering column escutchon: when I have it fitted against the dash nicely, there is an 1/8 inch gap between the bottom of the dash cluster and the escutchon. I cannot get the bottom of it to sit flush against the dash so I can screw it down. Is there a spacer or something I'm missing?

It's a cap for radio noise suppresion if you have an AIM look at the U69 section. Dave.

It goes to the battery gauge connector. Mine was on the side closest to the hood release handle. It doesn't cut much radio noise. My alternator still makes a whine when I run the radio in the car. (PS - I just went through getting my battery gauge working with the help of the forum members so I have recent experience with this)

Can't help with the column at all. Someone else will have to come in there.

Steve

Thanks!! Going to hook it up now.

As for how well it functions, my radio was just rebuilt with 'modern' interals...I'll find out later if I have any whine.

The height of the steering column is controlled by the bracket that goes under the steering column and bolts to the brake pedal frame.

I found this out just today as I was putting my car back together.

Loosen all 4 nuts you find on the bracket, then push the bracket back a bit in the direction of the firewall. That will cause your steering column to raise up.

If this bracket doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll post a picture of it.

Jeff

Maybe this will help. Do you have bracket #4 installed?

Thanks All!

Yes, #4 bracket is installed: the car is very orignal/unaltered.

I'll try adjusting the bracket mount to see if I can close up the gap.

There's a cast-in alignment pin at the top of the escutcheon that engages a hole in the cluster to locate it - is that engaged?

Yes: I have it engaged into the hole within the dash, yet there is still the gap at the bottom of the escutcheon and the dash.
