Default 67 Dash removal problem

I am trying to remove the speedometer cable from the dash assembly from my 67 coupe. I removed the 1/4 20 screws and put in the two 6" threaded rods. I removed the vent cable assemblys as well as the emergency brake assembly. I tried to pull the dash out and it came out about two inches but no more.

I notice that there is a metal "yoke" assembly that goes over the steering column at the base of the dash assembly. Does that come off? If so how?

What am I missing? Why won't the dash assembly just slip out?

Did you disconnect the oil line from the oil gauge?

That might be the source of your problem then, but there may also not be a whole lot of slack available in your main wiring harness. I just rewired my 65 in the last few weeks, and there's not a lot of extra wiring to work with.

The metal yoke you mention should be held on with 2 phillips screws. You should remove those screws and allow that yoke to move around. As you pull the dash cluster forward, if that yoke is still attached it will try to move your whole cluster up with the slight angle of the steering column and that's just increased friction you don't want to fight.

I removed the yoke screws with the others so that is not the problem. The dash wiggles side to side and comes about two inches forward. The yoke seems to be very snug and the top center of the dash seems tight. Maybe the wiring harness has little play?

67 does not have vent controls under dash or emergency brake. maybe you have some other issue holding dash?

I agree with the oil pipe to the gauge. Maybe I'm lucky, hold my mouth the right way or whatever. But, I usually have enough room to undo the speedo and tach cables without messing with the cluster too much.

You must be working on a '66 or earlier, not a '67 - 67's didn't have any vent cables or parking brake below the cluster. I've never found it necessary to pull the cluster to disconnect the speedo cable at the cluster, although it's tedious.

You have to disconnect the oil pressure pipe fitting at the gauge, and it's a LOT easier to pull the cluster if you remove the steering wheel first, then drop the column down to get some working room - otherwise you'll scratch up the column.

John, mine is a 67. I have Vintage Air so someone put the vent cables under the dash. I mistakenly said that there was a break release handle, it was the hood release.

At any point, I got the cable out and tried to put the new one in. After connecting the new one to the transmission and snaking the cable back up and through the firewall, it wouldn't go into the speedometer. The square end of the cable just wouldn't go in far enough to catch a thread on the fitting. I then looked at the old cable and saw that there is a red plastic fitting attached to the speedometer end of the old cable. That plastic piece went into the speedometer and the collar screwed it in place.

What was that piece of plastic? Have you any idea why the new squared cable end won't fit? Thanks, Joe
