Default been a while, but finally got the FI unit on the 64

I was posting a while ago, that after months of cam swaps and playing around with different carbs, I was putting my L76 back to stock specs with a Duntov 30-30 and a Holley 2818. Shortly after, there was a 1964 FI unit for sale on this forum that I gobbled up.

After it sat for 2 months in the garage, I finally got around to putting it on. I had to fix a leak in the expansion tank, but the last 3 nights i've had it out and it has been an absolute dream to drive.

The cam was purchased from Predator Cams (via Ebay) . I thought it was a blueprint version of the Duntov 30-30 but i found out today from Predator that it actually is a tweaked version... the duration specs at .050 are the same as are the lift and lobe separation, but i was told that the cam has more agressive ramps and he said that basically makes it a more torquey cam...

I can honestly say that the motor does feel more torquey than when I had the roller cams in it, so whatever they did worked.. at least in my case.

Anyway, once I got the FI on, the only tuning i had to do was to adjust the air bleed on the top of the air meter. I put the same curve in the distributor that I had when i had the holley on.

unfortunately, I don't have an aircleaner assembly yet, but the FI came with a KandN filter that works just fine although obviously doesn't look stock.

The most amazing thing is that it gets incredible gas mileage. I went on a 115 mile cruise trip with my wife the other night spanning the entire evening from about 6pm to 11pm, (in which we had dinner, cruised, drove all over south east Michigan, and drove up from Monroe to Detroit along Dixie Highway, which follows the Lake Erie shore line when I got home, I pulled into the gas station near the house becasue was concerned that my fuel guage was no longer working as it showed that I had only used 1/4 tank of gas... can you imagine my surprise when the car only took 6 gallons of gas.

that equates to about 19 MPG, and that is all city driving...

i still can't believe it. LOL
I even plotted out our entire course on mapquest to double check the miles that we drove (as best as I can remember) and even mapquest showed that we cruised at least 110 miles... so my trip in the car is very accurate.

Now that aint bad.

The only downside, as you might have read on this forum, is that with the FI cars, for some reason, they are susceptible to vapor lock and the pump gas just wont cut it in an FI even if your compression isn't that high to require the racing fuel...

when i did the math, I found out that my fuel economy has almost doubled compared to when i had the carb on the car, and with racing gas costing only 1.25 more than premium... im still ahead of the game.

does anyone else find that they get 20 mpg on a 40 plus year old FI unit?

nothing against modern EFI cars and their designers, but my 2004 GTO only gets 19 mpg on the highway with the T56 6 speed.

truely amazing.

i completed a 1750 mile road trip about a month ago in my 62 fuelie. combined city/highway mileage (much at 75-80 mph on the interstate and some big city street miles) AVERAGE was over 22mpg on 93 octane pump gas.

Congrats Aaron.... I am not surprised at all by your good mileage..
.... I had a black on black 1966 Olds Toronado with a 425ci that got 15 to 17 mpg... with enough oompah to smoke the front tires on that heavy coupe..
Must be a great joy to have that performance and economy in an
older package... awesome!!
Sounds like you have a great set up....
I just picked up an old induction piece myself a few weeks ago..
but it's a Mopar piece..
I will try to post a pick here... if it doesn't work.. check the black
and white pic on my avitar... the biggest crossrams ever built..
for a Chrysler "Sonoramic Commando"... came in 361, 383 and 413
sizes...
When I get it attached to a 413.... if life permits.. I'll challenge
you to a life imitates art race.... " a fuel injected Stingray and a
413... revvin up our engines and it sounds real mean"... from the
song "Shut Down" by the Beach Boys...

Anyway.... great to hear of your Fuelie success... -Kyle

Aaron, what trans and rear gears do you have? 19 MPG is very good.

I had a 66 with a 350, M-20? and 3:36 rear that got better MPG than my CJ-7 Jeep.

It happened on the strip where the road is wide
Two cool shorts standin side by side
Yeah, my fuel injected stingray and a four-thirteen
Were revvin up our engines and it sounds real mean

Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down

Declinin numbers at an even rate
At the count of one we both accelerate
My stingray is light the slicks are startin to spin
But the four-thirteens really diggen in

Gotta be cool now power shift here we go

Superstock dodge is winding out in low
But my fuel injected stingrays really startin to go
Im gettin the traction Im ridin the clutch
My pressure plates burnin that machines too much

Pedals to the floor hear the dual quads drink
And now the four-thirteens lead is startin to shrink
Hes powered by ram induction but its understood
I got a fuel injected engine sittin under my hood

if you ask the beach boys, i win the race LOL
that cross ram is way cool... congrats.

as far as gearing, I swapped my original 2.20 gear set in the trans for the 2.56 gears. you get the same exact rpm drop between 1-2 and 2-3 but 3-4 is where you loose alot of rpm with the wide ratio... but who the hell shifts from 3-4 at redline on the street?

anyway, i have 3.70s in the rear and have been thinking of going to 4.10s but i don't know if i want to do that now that i've got this set up and running so well with the 3.70s/

i know the 4.10s would be better off the line, but right now its great as it is.

Friend of mine has an intake like that. he would probably sell it if he knew it was going to be used and not resold quickly.

Always loved that song... played it way too much...
3.70 is a good ratio it can pull or cruise...depends on what you want..
and I guess.. how much you drive the vette..

If you will die a thousand deaths if you ever loose a stoplight encounter
....keep going...
but for all around cruise, fun, and good accel you're right in the
sweet spot as far as Im concerned...pretty much perfect... upgraded
pull from stock... yet can cruise at liveable rpm....

Have your Sprint car buddy order the wrong length of axles
for his quickchange.... ummm, "these axles are too wide for me..
but happen to be 64 Stingray length...call my buddy Aaron..
and offer him a 50% discount.. he might take that axle off your
hands.."

Your car sounds great Aaron... I'll let you know when the 413
comes together... -Kyle

yeah i love this thing..

it was fun with the close ratio and the 4bbl on it, but it is just such a joy to drive now with FI and the wide box.

the paint isn't perfect but looks great from 5 feet and the car is actually effortless to cruise with. i was worried that putting the 30-30 back in would give me some greif but it actually makes plenty low end power and when it comes on the cam, its wonderful.

i did the math, and having the 3.70s and 2.56 1st gear is like having the 2.20 1st gear and 4.30s

if i go to the 4.10s that would be like the 2.20s and 4.88s LOL

now that would be a ride.

with that cross ram... can't you bolt that up to the exhaust side as well and use them as a set of the worlds ugliest fenderwell headders also? i heard chrysler was trying to save costs by desiging an intake manifold that could also be an exhaust manifold LOLOL

just kidding..

thanks

Aaron

With the carbs out that wide... think how easy the plumbing would be
to go twin turbo... hmmmmmm..... I have spent a good week over at the
Crossfire forum getting help with twin tbi for the Sono's...it looks like a
go... gonna stay stock appearing..but tbi under the stock air cleaner with adapter plates...we may have to go with a non GM ecm to have compatibility with the Mopar distributor...
the Crossfire forum guys have been uber-helpful.. some real sharp
electronics guys over there... modifying their stock Crossfire ecm's to be
programable... awesome...
My desire for the Sono was fueled by curiosity of what the system would do in twin tbi form.... now Im going to get to find out... I wondered if I would ever have a set at all... its all coming together...
Have you stuck your gearing change in the Drag Race Analyzer program
????? or do you have a buddy who has Drag Race Analyzer??
I was going to suggest you find your tenths somewhere else besides
axle ratio... sorry, but I just like your all around Cowboy set up as is..
...if you could find them elsewhere you could stay cruiseable..
I always want to have my cake and eat it too...want the same
for you

It was two cool shorts fellers, not sharps.

I guess you had to be there. I realize that expression wasn't popular nationwide, even in the sixties.

Actually, I think you are wrong Jerry... it was 2 cool "barks"
... you know... like tree bark...that Brian Wilson was a naturalist..and the
60's were a very strange time..he he ... just kidding
We are running things a little loose here..
My manifolds are also not exactly right for a Superstock 413 either
there were 3 types of cross rams available for the wedge..
1. Long Rams (mine pictured)
2. Long/Short Rams... look like mine but had a common plenum before dividing into
seperate runners at about the valve cover...the crevass or valley is how you tell.
3. Short Rams..(superstock)..look more like traditional cross ram
Runner length dictated peak torque sweet spot... mine was at 2800 rpm...Short Rams
was at 3600 rpm..

And then, of course, there are the legendary "Exhaust Rams"... ultra rare pieces that
only Aaron knows the whereabouts of for sure...ha,ha

i thought it was shorts also, but i checked a website for the lyrics... but they are known to be wrong.

anyway,

i used to recite words from that song to a buddy in High School who was a Mopar nut... i think he was born with a pentastar branded on his forehead and came out with Mopar Muscle in his hand... He reminds me of the Dodge commercial where the babys firts word is "HEMI" and Dad is all proud LOL...

anyway, we'd bench race every day about the most popular combos in Chevy's and Chryslers and such and I'd always go back to the songs.

I'll pull out Shut Down, and he'd quote Little Ole Lady From Pasadena..

then i'd shoot back "She's real fine my 409" LOL, and it just so happened that when I was in my senior year, I bought a 1970 GTO that had a tripower setup on a 428. I had a cassette in the radio deck that was always cued up to "little GTO.... really looking fine" just to **** off anyone that got in the car. I had to change the words a bit to ." 3 dueces and a turbo hydro.... and a 4-2-8"

it didn't rhyme, but fit the car better... that one would really set him off.

funny.... noone writes cars about songs today...

can you imagine?

Greenday or Godsmack singing about their riceburners with a 4 inch exhaust and coffee can muffler.

Aaron,
Glad to hear you got the F.I. up and running. Sounds like you know your way around those old mechanical wonders. I'm pleased it didn't require any major expenditure. Turned out to be a good deal for both parties. This forum is a great tool. 19mpg is excellent with 3.70 gears!

Enjoy your 64

Nick

You might call Mike at 888-318-3883 for an air cleaner assy. He had a 63 F.I. car in his shop that had been severely crashed before I moved from Cal. It was waiting on the insurance people to resolve and may not lead anywhere but it's worth a call.

"Short" is a slang expression for a car - usually a fast or customized car - that has its origins in hispanic youth culture, and it's usually pronounced with a Spanish accent, "chort".

I'm not sure if it's in common use anymore, but it was in the sixties and seventies, and probably goes back further than that.

Look what these Mopar tards did to this awesome song?

"Shut Down"
An Accurate Version of the Beach Boy's song
Lyrics updated and made accurate by Gary P. Hamel and Dan Harling, 1995, revised August, 1997
Tach it up, tach it up, buddy gonna shut you down...

It happened on the strip where the road is wide**
Two cool shorts* standing side-by-side**
Yeah, a fuel-injected Stingray and my 413,
We're revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean

Tach it up, tach it up, buddy gonna shut you down...

Declining numbers at an even rate
At the count of one we both accelerate
The Stingray is light, his slicks are startin' to spin,
But my 413's really diggin' in

Gonna make tracks now, button-shift, here we go...

My Super Stock Dodge is crankin' out in low, but
The fuel-injected Stingray's motor's startin' to blow
To get the traction, he's ridin' the clutch,
His pressure plate's burning, man that smoke's too much!

Pedal to the floor, hear my dual quads drink
and watch my 413's taillights startin' to shrink
He's got a Chebby engine so it's understood
He's got a crank and rods and pistons shootin' out of his hood

Shove-a-lot, Shove-a-lot, Mopar muscle shut you down,
Shove-a-lot, Shove-a-lot, Mopar muscle shut you down,
Shove-a-lot, Shove-a-lot, Mopar muscle shut you down.
