speedometer ???
You are experiencing a common problem with 40+ year old cars. Its the speedo cable. The grease hardens over time and causes the cable inside the sheath to bind and then release with such force that the speedometer needle jumps. Its not worth trying to take out and fix. A new one is around $30 from the major vendors.
Just remember the trick, get some 6 inch 1/4 by 20 bolts and remove the two end screws in the dash, then insert the 6 inch bolts, then remove the rest of the dash screws. Now the dash can "slide" out and give you more room to take the head end of the speedo off......
Good Luck.....
