Default clear coat Buff question

My 64 roadster is done in base-coat, clear coat. In a fit on madness i bought a orbital buffer. Using the most benign buffing media i find i can buff to a great shine very easily. My question is how much danger is there of going thru the clear. Could a new coat of clear be applied? I love this thing but I'm worried. It's from Qriout's garage.

Thanks for the help

Get the Porter-Cable 7336 Sander Polisher at Lowe's for $99.

Get the backing plate and polishing pad kit from Meguiar's for $37

Get some #83 Dual Action Polish from Meguiar's and some #81 Speed Glaze from Meguiar's

Use the Porter Cable on speed 5 (never use speed 6 with foam pads as you will rip them apart). Go slowly over the area you want to polish with the #81 (move up to #83 if the swirls don't come out).

You will have beautiful results and you will never burn through your paint using these recommendations.

Go to www.meguiarsonline.com and www.autopia.org for great information on paint care.

Sorry I didn't read your post well enough to see you already bought a polisher.

Post the polisher brand and model and a picture if possible.

Some orbital polishers can indeed damage paint quite rapidly if not careful.

Rotary polishers can burn through paint in microseconds if not in the hands of an expert.

I find it helpful to use individual foam pads for each grit compound. Don't use the same one.

Here's a great article!

The PC-7424 is the same as the PC-7336 minus a sanding accessory. So either are fine.

short and sweet... i have bc/cc (PPG 2021 cc). i use a 6" orbital MVP polisher (WalMart, about $15) with a faux lambswool bonnet that can be held with one hand, and Meguiars # 26 yellow wax. no swirls, no risk of burn-through; great shine... takes about a half hour to wax the car. when you're finished, toss the bonnet in the washer to clean it up for next time.

as long as you're not 'heavy-handed' with your buffing, there is next to no danger of wearing through the cc. however, you have to be VERY careful on edges and corners (especially with a big wheel) as you can burn the paint.

cc can be topcoated again, but it is best to be done in complete panels. spotting it will eventually show up as a 'ring' at the edges that will take constant waxing to keep hidden.

I wouldn't go near a clear-coat finish with a buffer. You are just damaging what the painter put on.

and if you inadvertently get some trash in the clear, what do you suggest besides sanding and buffing?
