The speedometer on my C1 goes crazy bouncing wildly and making a grinding noise. Then it will operate properly for awhile. This happens on a regular basis. The odometer seems to be ok. Any ideas what is going on?
Soundds like the speedo head is ready to lock up. If you want to save the cable disconnect at the head connection to the speedo (cluster end). It sounds like you will need a the speedmeter need a rebiild, if you post Jason will answer and come back with the information.
the C1s had a few issues...one on the main frame they used a pot metal where the #1 gear goes through and with 40 years or heat and dried grease they fail. They also had copper speed cups that gave way and failed more than likely causing the noise...You can try and lube the cable first but I'll bet you'll need a speedo rebuild.
I had the same problem with a cable driven tach in a non Corvette vehicle. The needle would bounce and the tach would make a helluva racket, especially when cold. Finally, one day it quit working . Replaced the tach with a brand new one. New tach, old cable, needle bounces and tach makes heckuva noise.........( AAARGH!)
If the speedo works OK occationally, I'd bet on a kinked or ONCE KINKED cable. Before rebuilding the speedo head, I'd try a new cable and housing. The speedo head won't heal itself, the cable can go through spells where the kink effects the speedo and spells where the it finds an axial location that lets it work smoothly.
