Small Block Crate Suggestions for '60?
Folks, the post requesting BB information for a '66 has got my interest. Well, actually at Carlisle I walked past the GM crate motor display and never returned to ask so here goes:
I love my new '60 but the small block is a 305 and has limited potential. Does GM sell a crate TPI engine with computer and plug and play? Any cost figures boys?
I want to use the stock hood. After what I have been through with this restoration this would be a fun job for a change.
Thank you,
Ralph

Ralph,
You said you have a 305??? is it a 350 (typo) or a bored out 283 ?
What do you kbnow about the condition of the engine that is in there now, compression ?
There are more options than you can digest...what exhaust do you have?
I just went thru this same exercise last year.

Check out www.sallee.com or www.sdpc2000.com for crate engines. They have some decent sounding complete packages.
I have a ZZ4 crate engine in my '61. Great fit, no problem, use standard air cleaner and the hood fits. More than enough power.
Of course you can get an engine from Edelbrock or others also.

Hi Dave:
The price on the ZZ4 is very attractive.
Did you use the supplied intake?
What carburetor did you use?
Did you go automatic or 4 speed? It comes with a flex plate, if you replaced with a flywheel to go standard is the flex plate part of the balancing process (externally balanced)?
I would think only the internal rotating mass is balanced thus using a balanced aftermarket flywheel would work fine.
What exhaust manifolds did you use?
2" exhaust?
What starter?
Thanks in advance,
Ralph
