Default Help with Stereo Install

I removed my factory stereo from my 65 and need some assistance in hooking up my new Custom Sound radio. I am not sure what wires to connect to the Custom Sound connections. Can anyone help?

there shouldn't be that many connections to deal with. power, power antenna power, possibly power for the dash/display light, antenna coax lead, possible power for the memory if it is a digital radio, and the speaker wires (L, R, + ,-). might be other cables/wires for faders, preamps, CD players, MP3/Ipod players, etc.

hopefully you have a manual that came with the radio that identifies all of the various wires. shouldn't be too hard to figure which wire connects to what of your old radio's connections. if the new radio has plug-in connectors, you might even check to see if there is a wiring harness adapter that will mate your wires to the original radio's connectors.

Thanks, I am down to everything but the constant power and the power tied to the ignition, not sure maybe I have to run the constant power as I am guessing the original wiring may have all been through the ignition since there was no need for memeory.

i suggest you try the clock power lead for the constant power source, it's right there in the neighborhood... switched power can go to your ignition switch...

You do need to connect at least 2 speakers.
I put a Pioneer in the factory location which has two speakers in it and a sound bar in the rear.

There is a male connector plug in the bottom center of the fuse box that is hot all the time. You can connect the memory lead to that.

I found that the Mid America aftermarket unit that I installed would drain my battery so after the install, I always ended up disconnecting it if the car were to sit for more than a couple days.

Is there a way to tell which one of the wires from the original radio is the correct one to use, it seems like there is more than one?

i assume you still know which wires ran to your original radio. just get a test light (if you don't already have a test light (not a continuity tester, it has a battery in it) they are inexpensive at any parts store and are VERY handy to have) and check to see which one only has power only when the ignition switch is on.

The original radio connector has three cavities - yellow is switched ignition power, gray is for the dial light, and black is ground. Note: There's a second black wire coming OUT of that cavity that ends up screwed to the bottom of the instrument panel cross-brace; don't remove it, or everything electrical from the dome light back will go dead - that wire grounds the entire rear of the car.
